Parents and Sister got visa
First of all thanks to this site and everyone for posting their experience about getting visitor visa. This really helped!

My parents and sister who is 24 and just got married recently applied for their visa at the Chennai consulate of June 16th. They had asked for a translator but the consular officer asked my sister if she know english and didn't use the translator.
The officer just asked my sister a few questions like:
What is ur brother doing?
Is this ur first visit abroad?
What does ur husband do?
Where do you stay?
Are these ur parents (pointing to my parents)?
What places u want to visit in the US.

He just saw the papers sent by me mentioned on this site and the officer did not want to see any other documents. They have not got their passports yet so I am not sure abt the duration of their visa.

Thanks to all again!

Visitor visa for mother and sister
My mother and sister (whose case history is found second below this one) have received their passports (in 2 days) with the visa granted for 10 years; yes,you read it right, BOTH of them got it for 10 years and that surprised me too considering that my sister is unmarried and a student and eminently qualifies to be a potential immigrant.

They mentioned that the entire process was completely streamlined and that the primary documents that was of immediate interest to them - documents from the sponsor, the application forms and the passports of applicants- were taken from them right in the beginning itself. So all that was left with them was the rest of the bunch ( their property documents, etc) which was needed in case they needed to prove their point to the interviewer. But that was hardly necessary since only two questions were asked, one to each.

To my sister:
1. How many more years of study do you have?

To my mother:
1. What is your husband?

My mother, a housewife, speaks english well and hence opted for the english interview. That was it, they were then asked to pay the fees. The whole process- entry to exit took just about 45 minutes, I was told.

A point that they had noted with one of the fellow applicants was that they had brought the sponsor's (son-in-law)passport copy and failed to get that of their immediate relative (daughter) and were hence rejected.

Prepare your folks well and let them know the importance of being consistent ( in application and interview)

Best wishes

Chennai - Parents got 1 year VISA.
My parents got 1 year multiple entry VISAs from Chennai. We are from Bangalore. So, after the interview on Tuesday morning, my parents took the late evening Train to Bangalore and arrived (in BLR) early morning (on WED) . By about 9 AM they received a phone call from the TTS saying that the passports had arrived, and they could go and collect them from their local office. This is really unbelievable experience. Everyone had told us that it would normally take about a week's time to get the passports back. What a pleasant surprise!

Here are the details some of you might be interested in knowing:

1. My dad is 70+, but mom just completed 59 (early May) and running 60. However, based on IMMIHELP's suggestion, I had opted for the interview without trying our luck with the Drop Box facility.
2. The web appointment letter is a MUST to carry. Though I had specifically mentioned, my dad mistook my instructions to remove "post-it" notes and had almost removed the document (print out of the appointment) from the file it seems :-). But, Thank God, he decided to carry it anyways in the end.
3. The lady who collected the documents and DD's had almost lost one DD. But, thanks to another colleague of hers they were able to locate it in-time. So, please tell your folks to be extra cautious when they hand over the documents.
4. It is no big surprise that even with appointments the American Consulates tend to be crowded. The demand will always be there for US Visas. So, please tell your folks to be mentally prepared for the long waits once they enter the consulate. They may not get any chairs to sit and wait.
5. Dad took the interview, since he could converse in English. No questions asked to mom
6. Questions asked were on the following lines:
a. What is the purpose of your trip?
b. How long do you plan to stay?
c. Where does your son work?
d. Is he a green card holder?
e. How many children you have?
f. Where do they live?
g. How many children your son has?
h. What is your son's (or grand daughter's.... my daughter's) date of birth? (My dad couldn't recall what the exact question was... I believe he told both :-))
7. The interview itself lasted about 5 minutes it seems.
8. Because of the glass pane, the micro phone system, the anxiety, and of course the accent, it is always a little bit difficult to understand the questions the first time. So, my dad ended up requesting the interviewer to repeat the questions a couple of times it seems.
9. As far as the experience in Chennai itself is concerned, one of my elder brothers had accompanied my parents. Both my dad and my brother can speak Tamil. So, no hassles with lodging, boarding, etc.

Thanks to IMMIHELP for maintaining this very useful site.

Regards,
Anil

Visa granted for mother and sister
Sincere appreciation to the efforts of all who have made this site so informative. I deem it a personal responsibility to be including my experiences as a sponsor of my family's visitor visa.

My mother had applied for a visitor's visa in 2002 and had been rejected after the personal interview and we then reapplied 2 times by mail after that with no significant changes in our documents. After 3 rejects we simply gave up. My dad already has a valid U.S visa and is a Non-Resident Indian, but my mom lives in India and has been to the U.S 20 years ago as a tourist. We had not done a thorough job of getting our documents ready and preparing ourselves and no wonder our application was rejected. That is where this forum helped us immensely.

This time around my mom ( with 3 rejections stamped on her passport) applied again with my younger sister aged 22 years and still a student. I had prepared them well for the interview and they had all their documents intact. They went to the Chennai consulate.

I just received a phone call from them saying that their visa was granted. I am yet to know the details and will post them as soon as I get them.

I am sure luck has played a major role here, though I would not discount the role of the well prepared documents.

Many thanks and best wishes to the regulars of this site and to all those who have posted their experiences.
