Visitor Visa - Chennai Consulate - 10 Years Visa Approved
My parents (Father aged 60, Mother aged 54) attended the interview at Chennai Consulate on May 25th. They had requested for a transalator while confirming the interview date on the website. But when they went to the consulate, none of the translators were available. They were asked to attend the interview in English.

When their turn came, the Consular asked the following questions to my dad:

1. Why did your son goto USA?

Dad's Answer: For higher studies (MS)

2. Have you applied for Visitor Visa before?
Dad's Answer: NO

3. Are you sure?
Dad's Answer: YES, This is the first time we are applying.

Consular asked them to pay the fees. The consular instructed a lady working inside the office to help my dad and mom pay the fees at the respective counters.

My mom said that the consular was very nice and always smiling.

They got their passports next day with 10 years visa (multiple entry).

My borhter sent the papers. He is on H1. We are two kids and both of us reside in US. I have green card and my paretns mentioned about my green card and other details in the application, even though the travel agent told them not to disclose any details about me unless asked for.

My dad retired from govt. service and is working as a Principal in a private college. But the consular officer didn't ask for any papers except I-134 and I-156.

Thanks to the site and to all who posted their experiences. It helped a lot. Good luck to all who are applying fo visa.

parents got visa
Thanks to this site and everyone who helped out.

My parents got visa for 10 years in Mumbai consulate. They were asked few questions
1) Who is in US? 2) Where does your daughter live? 3) Is she married? 4) Do you have enough money for this trip? 5) How many children you have? 6) Asked for my employment letter 7) Asked for my brother's employment letter (who is in india).
Also my visa stamping is expired, I have renewed patition. So the consulate lady asked, your daughter's visa is already expired. Then my father told her that she has renewed it, etc.

At the end consulate lady told you have arranged your file very well. Good luck for your trip. They received passports in 2 days.

Thanks again. Wish you all good luck who are applying for visa.

Hello my friend applied for F1 extension through chennai dropbox facility. He applied for the visa on 11.May.2004. Visa was approved on 19.May.2004. He recieved the visa through the courier on 21.May.2004. This website is of great help. Good luck to all of you. Donot give up hope. My friend's case was a difficult one - he already spent 5 years here. His brother and sister are green card holder. But he provided all the required materials and various conceivable supporting documents such as research report, printout of publications etc. He even provided a list of phone bills to show India ties. More relevant document u have, visa officer tend to believe ur case.

During my PARENTS visitor visa ( I am the only daughter ), they said that they donot want to stay for long in USA becaus ethey donot speak the language and will simply be bored. They showed the officer their tentative plan of USA tourism - what they want to see like Grand Canyon, Lady liberty etc. They asked for 1 month visa. They were approved 3 year visa.

3 lessions:
1. Tell specfically when u want to come back - a ticket may help or reservation
2. Tell what u want to do in that time period - what u want to visit etc.
3. Why u wonot be staying in USA for ever - language, indian interest etc.

You should be thorogh. Anyway good luck people

parents visa rejected under 214(b)
My parents went for visitor visa interview at Chennai consulate on May 24th. The visa application was rejected under 214(b). We are all very disappointed and upset. I had invited them to visit this summer to spend some time with us and see places. They have visited here once in 1996 and extended their stay to 12 months with approval from INS. They applied now in April using drop-box and were asked to come for personal interview with the extension approval document.

In the interview the officer was very rude to them. He looked at the extension approval document, affidavit of support which I had supplied, my employment letter and other forms. He then said that we had lied to them, that their daughter had come on student visa and then stayed back, they had come for 6 months and then stayed back. We have followed all legal procedures when I switched from F1 to H1 and then permanent residency and never violated the INS rules. But it seems like some of the cases are pre-determined and he said that visa is refused as they will come here and settle down.

My parents are old and have close ties in India and have no interest in settling down here. He did ask them if they have other children and my father replied that yes, they have one other daughter who lives in India and they just want to visit me and see some places.

He then asked them why they extended their stay last time and my father replied that they went to east coast to see some tourist places. The officer apparently then said that U.S is a large country and they will need several years to see all the states and said visa is rejected. I am checking to see if they can reapply and somehow convince the consulate that they will return to India after their visit.

Parents got 10 year visa from Chennai
My parents got 10 years multiple entry visa from Chennai. Both are over 65 years and retired. They used drop box in Hyderabad. They applied on 14th and got there passports back with visa on 21st. But on my mother visa last name was spelled wrongly. I guess they have to send them again for correction. This site is very helpful.

W2 for parents visa
I agree. Recently they have started asking for W2 forms of sponsor for parent's visa...
My parents were also asked and they did not have them, luckily their application was not rejected for that and they got 10 years (probably because of their own standing which is very good).
Thanks.

Parents' visas refused under 214(b)
They had their interview on May 21st @ Chennai Consulate and were denied under 214(b). It's weird that the consular said the refusal was because of not having my W2's for last 3 years. Otherwise the questions asked were about my job, salary, location etc.

Whoever is maintaining this site, could you please update the sponsor's list of documents with W2's as well?
