I came to India for dec vacay for 3 weeks. Went for stamping in my first week and got unexpected 221g as my masters come under TAL. I was totally unfamiliar of 221g. I am in US from last 7 years and this was my 3rd stamping. Working on H4 EAD in an IT company which have no relation to my research done 8 years ago. Basically whole trip got screwed up. Though my employer was good as they extended my vacay. But no salary for the month of jan and had to cancel my and my son's ticket, so much money to drain. I used to read all the forums and used to get upset, seeing some folk's stuck for indefinite time period. If your case is under TAL, be assure of visa getting approved in 5 weeks. Some people who are lucky even got in 3 weeks. Enjoy ur time and stay positive as nothing you can do.

Had my interview on Oct 18 2016, VO asked some general questions, and he asked me if i have client letter, the documents which we submitted during the H1B application. I was not having the Client letter at that time. He asked me to wait for some time, waited for 4 hrs and VO called me and issued me a 221G - Blue slip and told that he is putting my application Admin Processing and it may take couple of weeks to get the final decision. They returned all the documents including my passport.
Oct 18 : Visa Inerview & Got 221G
Nov 08 : Received email from Consulate to email the documents
Nov 21 : Emailed the requested documents
Jan 09 : Received email to drop the passport and dropped on the same day
Jan 11 : 1st Status Update in CEAC but status is still "Admin Processing"
Jan 12 : Status changed to Issued, and the Passport Status is changed to Ready to Pick Up
Jan 16 : Collected the Passport

Hello All,
VO have asked about my employment history as I was with same employer from last 7 years. He asked whether I'm married and have any children. He also asked about my degree and why am I not eligible for drop box (Previous stamping was done in another country). Finally he asked me to give the LCA, I 129 and Documents sent by my employer. He asked me to wait giving a yellow slip to wait. After 2 hours he finally gave me a blue slip and said need additional time to process my application and no need of additional documents. still waiting to hear from the consulate.

I'm a PhD in Chemistry from USA, working for a global materials company in USA since 2013, came to India for H1B renewal stamping and vacation. As expected with technology background, had 221g back in 2014 for my first H1B. Since on a same job and employer, thought this time will be smooth. But was wrong and got 221g for additional" Administrative Processing" under TAL. VO said with technology background will always have to go through the background check and said it should take ~3-4 weeks.
11/30- Interview for H1B extension- issued 221g
11/30- submitted the documents (I-797, CV & research summary and Questioner)- Admin Processing
1/3/2017- contacted support & received a generic email stating that all 221G cases should resolve within 60days
1/12/2017- received email from consulate to submit passport
1/16/2017- Submitted my passport (delayed due to HYD Consulate/VAC long weekend)
1/18/2017- Received an email from Consulate to collect my passport and approved visa

VO says that I applied for STEM extension and at the same time I received my H1B. So, some information is not been synched between systems. VO suspects that my international travel during STEM might be reason for the issue. STEM is managed by Dept of Homeland Security and there happened to be some glitch and that resulted some information being missing in their system. I have no action to take but it takes 2-3 weeks to process.
I have return flight ticket booked for Jan 27 3 AM but i might miss if I do not hear back quickly.

My visa appt was at 8:30am, the visa officer approved 1 H1 and rejected 2 B1 visas ahead of us. She asked questions about my education, job description, location, head office location and gave 221g white slip and took the entire petitioner's packet. No additional documents were requested. No questions to my wife or kids. She said that I should hear back in 5 days if not I should contact the embassy.
It's been a week now I attended the visa interview, status shows still pending administrative processing. I did not contact the embassy as I'm reading from other readers that following up is useless.
