B1 visa interview experience
My visa interview was scheduled on 31st May 2012 at 7.45 AM at Mumbai US consulate. I stayed at Hotel Golden palace in Kurla west about 5kms from the consulate. Reached the venue at 6.50 AM and to my surprise there were already 60 odd people ahead of me for 7.45 AM slot. Co-ordination there was awesome, the line moved at a fast pace, tokens were granted and bio-metric finger scans were done. I had to wait for 20 mins for my number to flash on the screen. In the meanwhile I could see & observe people being interviewed. When my turn came I reported at the window; and I was asked following questions:
1.Good morning Sir
Me: Good morning officer.
2. Can I see your passport,
Along with the passport I also handed the application form, but he said just the passport.
3. What is your name?
Me: Vishal ....
4. What is the purpose of Travel
Me: Business.
5. Where do you work?
Me: XYZ company
6. How long have you been working there?
Me: 2 years.
7. Where would you be travelling in the US? And why?
Me: To attend X conference in Florida & Y conference in NY, and also to meet with prospective customers.
[Behind the window VO switched off the mike & cross checked the information on his system. Maybe he googled those conference names I mentioned]
8. What are these conferences about?
Me: X- is about cloud computing & we are partners with Y company so I would be representing my company there.
9. Will you be travelling alone?
Me: Yes
VO reviewed my passport, it has a stamp from Thailand immigration looking at which he said :"your visa is approved sir and it'll be couriered to you in 3-4 days"
My take on the entire process is: Be confident, give honest answers, when VO stares at you look in the eye. Be calm and listen before you talk, the more confidently and calmly you talk less are the questions asked.

B1 Approved :) on first try
Got into a BEP. security check, was sent back..(my mistake i had to remove my chain with iron idol on it.). again re-entry its 8:15 but appointment at 8:00.
cursing my self running to the finger print counter.got my token number. here goes.
I was sent to 2 different counter later. since both the VO's pissed off with B2 visa applicants. finally to the 3rd counter. already 1 guy getting grilled from an indian company. rejected.
my turn.
VO: Good Morning ! to my surprise.
me:Good morning Sir.
VO:where are you travelling.
me:xyz, abc
VO: what !! Oh ok xyz,abc
VO:how many days.
me: 4weeks.
(looking at him with straight face)
VO:are you going for RG.
me:No i am going to have initial introduction meeting followed by KT session. from my org.

me No its me alone.
VO:are there any other resources already travelled for this project.
Me: I am the first one.
VO: where are you going to stay.

VO:Who do you report to after reaching and where.
me:with confidence my onshore manage xxx at zzz

B1 VISA GOT REJECTED
This is the final question asked by Visa Officer and i think where he is not happy with the answer and Rejected.
Visa Off : How many weeks you are travelling?
Karuna : 9 weeks.
Visa Off : Give your training shedule,
Karuna : Handovered
Visa Off : The training plan is showing 12 weeks in BEP,its quite long
Karuna : No Sir, its only the expected shedule stay. I am travelling only for9 weeks as the training plan is fixed.
Visa Off : even 9 weeks is quite long.
Karuna : Expalined about training plan
Visa Off: I am sorry. I cant approve your Visa.

I had B1 US VISA interview on 21st May 2012 at Mumbai and it got rejected.

In the DS160 form, i have mentioned the duration as 2 months, but in the Invite Letter they have changed as 2 weeks. So, in the interview i told as 2 weeks.
I think, i got caught here and it got rejected.
Please be carefull while filling the DS160 Form and say the same thing in the Interview.

My B1 Visa got approved in my 1st attempt :)
Date : 18/05/2012
Venue : Chennai
Appointment Time : 7.30 AM
But reached the consulate only by 7.20AM, i was so tensed since i was too late. i stood up in the queue and after all formal check ups i went into the interview hall and waiting for 15 to 20mins by observing other peoples who are attending the interview.

VO : Good Morning
VO: Where are you going?
Me: Fullerton, California
VO: How Long?
Me: Just 10 days
VO: What is the purpose of your Visit?
Me: To attend some business meetings and my presence is required for this discussion.
VO: What is the Name of your Company?
Me: Real Time Ordering
VO: Are you going to do any Productive work?
Me: No i am not, i know that i'm not supposed to do any productive work in B1 Visa.
VO: Have you traveled abroad earlier?
Me: No, this is my first trip.
VO: How long you are working with this Company?
Me: for the past 3 years.
VO: What kind of Meetings you will be attending/ What will be discussed?
Me: We will be having meetings with new clients and discussing new procedures regarding setup and finding possible flaws and correcting them. There will be a discussion regarding new strategies for marketing and communications going forward.
Finally VO said that your Visa has been approved and it will be couriered to you in 5 business days.
Tips:
1. Be confident with your answers
2. Make Eye Contact with VO, even if he is not listening to you.
3. Stay behind the mic and speak politely.
4. Dress in Formals
I was very lucky to have a cool VO, he didn't even ask or look any of my documents. please don't be panic, good luck

Attended B1 visa interview at Chennai consulate on 17 May 2012 at 08:15
My visa interview experience was relatively simple. I reached the Chennai US consulate at 8 am only (my interview time was 8:15) and there was long queue. I told the security that my appointment is at 8:15. He immediately let me go near the token counter out of turn and got the token.
After the formalities of checking confirmation letter, passport and fingerprints, I was allowed to enter the hall of visa interview.
It is true that I was a little bit nervous but did not show that. As soon as I went near the counter when I was called, he started to ask questions even before he see my papers. Questions are below:
1.Why do u want to go to US?
Told the reason
2.What business do u do?
I am working at xxx as yyy
3.What is ur client's business?
Briefly told about client
4.VO asked details about my technical expertise. Expalioned him.
5.What is your salary?
Told him in rupees monthly and yearly in lakhs
Finally he said you visa got approved.
It took less than 5 minutes. But he asked me repeat my company name and typed in his PC (may be he was googling it ) and also my client company name.
