My B1 Visa Experience
I attended the B1 Visa recently at Chennai. My interview slot was around 11.45 AM and I was in the queue by 11.25 AM. I could see the Consul General outside making sure everything was ok

I handed over my appointment letter to get the token number (While you are on the Queue take out the interview letter and keep it outside the folio). After all mandatory security clearance I was allowed to sit in a small passage. Please make sure you keep watching those LCD TV's as your number might suddenly flash.

Once you see the number proceed to the counter and hand over the DS-160 Form.HDFC receipt and your passport. I was a bit scared at this point because the people in line before me told that I needed a photo. Fortunately I asked the officer and he explained me that there is no need for it. BTW I also saw a photographer sitting on the corner, looks like you can avail this facility inside the consulate.

The person at the counter then puts all your documents in order in a blue / green file. You will have to again sit in Queue for Ten Print. Once this is done you can proceed to the Visa issue hall in the next building. Assistance is provided and you can always ask one of the executives there if you are in doubt.

On the visa hall, again watch out for the LCD, it's easy to get distracted because of so much activity going on.

My turn came and I answered in a calm way

Me : Good Morning
VO: Good Morning
VO: Can I have your files, please
Me : Sure ( I hand over my blue file)
VO Looks in system and then asks me questions
VO : How long have you been with this company
Me: x months
VO: What's your purpose of travel
Me: Training
VO: How long
Me: 10 Days with couple of days for sight seeing
VO: Are you married
Me: Yes
VO: Is this your first time to USA
Me: No
VO: When did you travel last to USA
Me: In 20xx
VO : We are issuing Visa to you Sir. You'll get your passports back in a weeks time
Me : Thank you

I Left the hall immediately and came out of the consulate. The interview process happened in less than 2 minutes from the start and none of my documents were checked.(Though I prepared very well with all relevant documents)

My experience can be summarized as follows
1. Dress Professionally. Tie not required unless you are a high profile executive. I saw some of the guys had come in wrinkled shirts, trainers.I hope they weren't applying for a B1 / L1
2. Be confident
3. Be Honest and always look at the VO and answer
4. If you are nervous, its ok. Everyone is.
5. Carry business cards
6. If you are from a company, wear your name tag
7. Answer only what's asked. Clear and concise . If VO doesn't understand he/ she will ask you to explain more.

I strongly felt that they assess you on the basis of your communication, your posture and the confidence level and not on the basis of your documents.

So do remember and Good Luck

B1 VISA Approved
Hi,

I have been to B1 VISA interview yesterday (22-Feb-2011) at Chennai. I had attended the interview at 7:30 AM slot. I have been to consulate at 6:45 Am and we are allowed to form the queue only at 7:15 AM (not much rush was there as it was earlier slot). My company has arranged me Hotel and Vehicle for me to reach and come from consulate so, everything went smoothly for transporation. While entering into Consulate remember following things:
    1. I was wearing formal dress and wearing my company ID card as per earlier posts in this website
    2. You are not supposed to carry any of electronic devices (including CD, DVD/Floppy disks and Cell phone). If you carry any of these, you have to keep these things in a outside small shop (ofcourse you have to pay money for the token for keeping ur things). Also, Security matters,so better keep all electronic items in ur hotel room or where u r staying.
    3. I just carried documents to be submitted file and one more file for original documents along with my purse.

In the gate,
    1. You have to give confirmation letter and receive a receipt which in turn has your token number
    2. After this there would be a security check. Then you will be allowed inside the consulate.

Documents collection:
    1. You have to wait for the token number and join at the Window where your token number is displayed for the processing
    2. When you handover the document at the window, he/she will remove HDFC Receipt xerox, Mark Sheets, Experience certificates, Bank statements and ITR from ur file. Remaining documents will be given to you with the file after entering some data in the computer.
    3. Wait for the Finger print Queue (there would be a person helping you to take 10 finger prints). After this you will be asked to goto the VISA interview hall.

Interview Hall:
    1. Again wait for your token number to appear in the window and join the Queue where ur token number is displayed
    2. Following are the discussion between me and VO (when you are standing in the Queue, you can clearly hear the interview discussions at your Window and in the adjacent Window):
VO: Good morning
Me: Good morning (Handed over the file to VO)
VO: Why are you going to USA?
Me: I told Meeting and Discussions and continued with purpose of the meeting, my roles and duration (when i was standing in the Queue, the lady who was the interviewer in the next window asking so many scrutinizing questions on role, duration and purpose of the trip and i prepared answers for them. When my interviewer asked this first question, i spoke all my prepared answers continously). She (VO) took a moment to digese my answers but i felt satisfied with my answer.
VO: How long u r working for the current company?
Me: 5 months
VO: What is ur previous company?
Me: told company name with years of experience
VO: When is the last time u hv been in USA (by looking at my previous company's L1 VISA)
Me: told the month and year
VO: Your VISA has been approved
Me: Thank you

VO: Are you married?
me: NO
VO kept looking at screen for 2-3 mins.. he looked very worried.. left seat for 4-5 min, came back again typed smthing fr 2-3 min
VO: Okay I cannot approve your visa this time but it does not mean you cant get it. I am giving you a form you email us all the asked documents and you will get it.
Handed over a yellow slip with nothing checked and a pink slip with everything checked.
My trip obviously will be cancelled as I have to reach US by 23rd for my training. and their process wil take at least 2-3 weeks.
Advice for all: read the technology alert list and if you by any way fall in that category, or are from a good college, do prepare a statement on how U r not a threat to U.S. else your trip will be delayed.

B1 VISA Approved
Hi Friends,
Today I have attended B1 VISA Interview with Hyderabad Consulate. I would like to share my experience with you all.

Interview went like this:

VO: Hello
Me: Hi.. Good Afternoon. How are you doing today?

VO: Great. How about you?
Me: Good. Thanks.

VO: Why are you going to US?
Me: Explained the purpose of my visit. In my case, to get knowledge on our client's existing business.

VO: Have you been to US before?
Me: No.

VO: You have H1B VISA with you. Why didn't you travel?
Me: I was already having a H1B VISA which is expiring this september. But as my project was kept on hold, I didnt go there. I explained the same to the VO. He stressed couple of times and took some time to check the things about the client of H1B VISA.

VO: So who is ur client now?
Me: Told my client name.

VO: For which company are you working currently?
Me: Told about my current company. He has keenly observed my company ID card which I had it visible to him.

VO: How long were you been with your current company?
Me: 2 Months I replied

VO: How long are you going to stay in US?
Me: 12 Weeks

VO: 12 weeks... Too long for Knowledge Transfer. Why do you need that much time?
Me: I have to discuss with the business users and understand the existing process. It might take series of meetings for me to understand the process. For that I need this much time.

VO: Whats your client? Repeat Question...
Me: I told the name once again. I think he is checking the client website in his computer.

Finally, the VO said "Ok Sir. Your VISA has been approved. You will receive your passport and VISA in a week time. Enjoy the day sir."

Thanks much. Have a good day. Bye...

Please make a note of all the things in your mind before facing the interview. Who and all got stamped previously, pls recollect those things even...

I wish you all the success for all the aspirants.
