---I did everything all by myself ---
It was really stressful ride as y’all have expressed and/or have been experiencing.
Helpful
- Calling Support Center and talking to rep
- Spending some time to do some research
- Being on this forum when you are about to go crazy but you see all the others who also went through what you are going through
- Ask Emma so many questions in different ways and you actually get real person in a chat so your questions get answered for real
- Don’t even bother to check the new USCIS account (
https://my.uscis.gov/account/applicant). They never update anything. Rather, check the old website (
https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/landing.do).
Not Helpful
- filing your case all by yourself (cannot be confident/constantly fearing you are going to fail etc)
- USCIS Websites and Portals: they are in transition of the portals but old portal has more info and new one has nothing. (ex. SR referral # did not get updated in new portal) checking these both portals made me crazy
- USCIS forms and instructions: information is everywhere. Old and new.
- Emma in USCIS website is not exactly helpful until you get real person in a chat.
- Contacting through email (Lockbox) Response was too late that was not useful for me with such a delay.
To-do
- DYR (Do Your Research) - I blindly believed in what is being written in USCIS website and I regret doing so. For awhile, it said it will take 90 days for EAD to be issued, but they changed that timeline in the end of March 2018 from 90 days to 2.5 months to 5 months, later 4-6months. But obviously, if I were to be in this forum or utilized any resource, I would have known better that it would take much longer than it says.
- Call rep at the Service Center when you have questions. Their customer service really varies. Some ladies are having a bad day, some others are happy to help you. I want to be as polite as possible to them, but they could be very hard to be heard, so politely ask could you repeat that one more time? Etc
Not to-do
Be always skeptical of what is being said on USCIS website. It could be old information or what you are looking at is just wrong. So double check with other resources available.
Putting mailing address as physical address in I-485. - I put my husband’s father’s address on I-485 because we were not sure of if we are moving out of the house or not (leasing was up in a few months then).
Personal notes:
I had a hell of months for being unemployed, but I have been lucky that I was able to stay positive doing some studies for my freelancing, and I actually earned some money being a freelancer (I do website for artists). You cannot be employed but you can be self-employed when you are waiting for the card.
Hope this is somewhat helpful to someone out there. :)
