Successful stamping for H1B at Chennai Consulate
Hi All,

First of all thanks for all the members who posted their experiences in this site, which made my preparation good.

I had attended the Visa Interview on November 15th at 15:15 hours at Chennai Consulate. I had a long stand in the ‘Q’ on that day, as there is systems problem and even finger print machines hadn’t worked properly. I had entered in to the Consulate around 16:15 hours.

At the entrance of the consulate, they checked my Passport and Visa Interview letter (downloaded along with DS forms).

Next, I was guided to one building, where some Indians are arranging the Passport, DS 156, DS 157, Interview Letter, I 797, I 129, G 28, LCA, etc in to one folder. Later we are supposed to enter another building (main building, where finger prints and interview was done) and be seated there.

Next, when I had seated there, some Indians (who are there to help us) will come and gave folders by calling the names. [Note: I hadn’t taken any token on that day and no such system is found on that day as there is problem with their systems and as it’s too late]. Next, we will be guided to go in a line, for taking finger prints. I had given my finger prints in counter number 1 and was sent to counter number 14 for interview.
Note:
1. Some times, the VO’s in the counters are taking the interview at the time of taking finger prints itself.
2. There are 13 + 1 counters in total. They will take finger prints in any of the counters and do the interview in any of them, so be careful even at finger prints.

Before me, two of them were rejected and one had a query. I expected that this counter was a rejection counter, but that’s not.

My conversation with VO is like this,

Me: Hello Sir
VO: Hi, can I have your folder?
Me: Handed over the folder.
VO: What is your highest qualification?
Me: Bachelor of Technology
VO: Can I have your Degree transcripts?
Me: Yes, Sure [I had given him my OD and marks list]
VO: What is the purpose of your visit?
Me: To assist YYYY in their Software Development Solutions.
VO: On what project kind of project you are going to work?
Me: In-house project sir.
VO: What is that project?
Me: blah.. blah.. blah..
VO: Ok.. What is the use of the project?
Me: blah.. blah.. blah.. [As the project is health care related, I explained that all clinical cares, hospitals, patients…etc… benefits.. reporting… etc.. later I switched slowly to explain him SDLC, Architecture.. etc.. relating to project. – During my answer for this question, his system was hanged and I had my answer for about 5 – 7 minutes, after his system was resumed back, he said it’s OK.]
VO: Typed some thing in his system and returned my I-797 form and said, “I’m approving your Visa and you will receive your passport through VFS courier”.
Me: Thank you sir.

That’s all!! He asked no more documents.

So, I hope all future aspirants, Good Luck!

Some tips:
1. Have a smile on your face. The first 5 – 10 seconds conversation of you with Visa Officer is very important. Greet them, even if they don’t. If they say Hi, you say Hello. Normally, they seek for this kind of wish from you.
2. Be bold. Talk with confidence, with the VO during the interview.
3. Relax, have a good breath and no need of tensions at the consulate.

Regards,
Ravindra

H1B intvw @ Chennai - Nov 18.
Hi All,

First of all many thanks for the experiences presented through this post. It really helped me lot.Hope my experience gives picture to u of what is going to happen.

A)PLEASE BE CALM AND RELAX. They are their to verify the docs and help.
B)KEEP SMILE ON UR FACE, FROM THE POINT U ENTER THE CONSULATE TILL U EXIT.
C)DO NOT ARGUE.

I too like all people was in anxiety abt this intvw. I did not know what was going to happen there.Going thru the posts i ws able to visualize the process. This is hw it went.

My appointment was scheduled Nov 18th, 2006 at 7:30 am. It was raining a lot. Chennai people pls take umbrella with u or u will get wet. The gates opened at 7:30 am. Best part was, as it was morning slot 100 people were just let inside the building. We did not had to sttand in the queue for long time, though i arrived the spot at 6:30 am.

1.Security check

Inside we had security check. No Bisquit packets or sealed packets, no bags allowed inside.

2. Documents verification

i)DS156
ii)DS157
iii)HDFC Receipt(Yellow)
iv)Passport
v)I-797
vi)Appointment letter

Pile those five in a group,so that it will be easy for you to give them. Make sure that you, fill the form fully. Following are the common things people forget to do:
a)U have signed the DS156 form with date.
b)In DS156, fill ur intended arrival to US. Give the Month and year. No problem, even if u r not able to make that month.
c)In DS157, Fill your name with native alphabet.
d)Stick the Photograph to the form
e)Make sure photograph adheres specifications given in the VFS.

When u submit those documents, be patient while the authorities go through them. Answer their questions warmly. Then u will be directed to intervew building.

3. Interview.

Tips: Be patient when u enter the building. If u have any query take the help of the authorities who are guiding everybody. They will help you to assign the counter. If u are told to sit and wait, please do so. Dont assume that this will be like Table chair interview. Its rather like standing near the cashier of a bank, standing behind the glass. If you are applying thru t

i was directed to counter number 13. As metioned earlier, all the counters were not crowded bcoz of first batch. This counter got opened just when i came. I ws standing near the yellow line on the ground, waiting for the VO to call me.

VO: Hi Madam, How are you doing?
me: Fine. Thank You.
(I was suprised when he addressed me first)

Vo: Please come.
I went to the counter.

VO: He asked to give me the green folder.
(Honestly i did not know what green folder meant for).
me: I was not given any folder as such, this folder is my personal folder.

VO: He looked at the company logo and asked that it was of YYYY company.
me: Yes. I used to work for this. But not now.

VO: Please give me the folder.
I gave the folder. He emptied the folder, took it and went inside. Came back kept the folder in the piles.

VO: U should not use company folders for personal things.
me: I was given this folder by the company itself. So i thought, i could use it. I am sorry, if it should not have been done. This will not happen further

VO:Please give me your degree certificate.
Me: Here it is.
(I handed the certificate)

VO: Which field?
Me:Computer science

VO:Put ur left index finger on the scanner
VO: Now put your right index finger.
(My both fingers were scanned)

VO:Are you going for in-house or Client
ME:Currentls as of now, in-house. Once i reach there i will get to know which client project.

VO:Will you be working with client or in-house
ME:That will be in-house

VO:I-129 please.
ME: Sure.
(I gave the doc)

VO was typing on computer for one min. Then he suddenly said VISA APPROVED.

ME:Can I collect ot today evening?
VO:U should feel lucky that in day like Saturday u got visa, when it is nearing closing time.

ME: Thanks a lot!!!

Parents Got VISA 2nd TIME - Read for lots of tips inside.
Dear All,

My parents visa rejected on May 02 2006, which I booked that interview date 6 months before,
bcoz of the backlog in the interview. Interview went this way very bad experience, but we learnt
something out of it.

May 02 2006 9.00 AM.
VO: How many childrens do you have.
Mother: 2 sons, one in india and one in US . (Not a good detailed answer)

VO: Is your son sending money to you.
Mother: Yes, he sends money. (Very Bad answer, honesty didnt worked here. I am sending for my personal
life insurance. but my mother didnt explained properly)

VO: how much he is sending
Mother: I dont know the details My elder son takes care of it. (Way bad.)

VO: What are you doing for living?
Father: I am a farmer. (ok, not a detailed answer)

By this time VO decides to reject the VISA. Presumption is you are a potential immigrant.

After having a bad experience waited for months to get another appoinment, Since consulates
reduce the backlog of waiting for the interview. I booked the appointment Nov 07 2006 for
the interview date Nov 17 2006. Really tough to collect all the required documents. with other
pains that I have been into it.

Given that I had 9 days, to work on the documents. I asked my parents to take an appointment with
an immigration lawyer. He gave little tips as follows.

Take big picture of the family photographs, with grand son/daughter in the picture.
Pictures of office premises with employees if any works for you. (doing a personal business/farmer)
Proof of letterhead that you have for the business.
Lawyer asked my brother to sign in DS-156 as the application prepared by instead of me.
(As my parents cant speak/write in english)
Lawyer asked to change 2 months visit instead of 6 months.
Since my mother said I am sending money to India, lawer asked to produce an affidavit of Asset
on my name for the property I had in India. And I added Life Insurance affidavit which I pay in India.

And I trained my parents to talk loud and clearly, each and everytime VO asks the question
tell the answer and provide the proof along with it, like the pictures and affidavit. even if
the VO dont ask for it.

More over prayed to God.

Nov 17 2006 9.30 AM
There was a huge Q on Nov 17, After standing long in the Q, turn came up. This is how the
interview went.

Looks like consulate lady VO surprisingly talks in Tamil.

VO: How many children do you have.
Mother: 2 Sons, Elder is in India staying along with us and younger is in US. Showed the Big Family Picture.

VO: VO was so happy to see my brothers son, telling that he so cute and lovely.
Mother: Thats my grandson.

VO: What you do for living?
Father: I am a farmer, also I manufacture and sell BioFertilizer to our entire district. gave the pictures that he took along with his employees and the infrastructure he had. Also he showed the letter head for the bio agri business.

VO: Where is your Son working.
Mother: works for so and so company.

VO: When did he go to US?
Mother: Oct 2000

Father: Just give us VISA for 2 months to see our son and we will be
back to India.

VO: Smiles and said I will give 6 months VISA. Golden Words.

At the end so happy.

Above all the issues and happy ending. I am Permanent Resident, I got married after my adjustment status. So I cant bring my wife she applied for H1b. And she got stuck there with 221G asking for
client letter. Please pray to god she gets the VISA too. I am open for any helping hand please write the questions in the

replay of sateesh
dear satish mr. Friend reply is good. i also going to say u that Mr. Friend is right. Also just telling u that Inhouse project require Project description & while a client side project doesn't require project description. you can veryfy it from ur company they will tell u in details. thanks

Hi Sateesh
You have to understand very clearly about Inhouse project and client (location)not client project.
Inhouse project means you are going to work at employer place that also needs clients.
If you are going to work at client location then you should know which client you are going to work you should carry the client agreement.
If it is an inhouse project you should carry project details in detail.

Issued 221(g)
Hi All,

I attended for H1-B visa on 16'th November. The VO issued 221(g) right away. He did not ask much questions. He asked the below questions:
1) what is the purpose of this application?
2) what is you highest qualification?
3) Are going to work with the client or employer?
Here I was caught I replied that I am going to work for the employer and not for the client. Then VO said the information is not clear, ask your employer to send E-mail to the consulate all the points given in the 221(g) form.

Please let me know is any one got this kind of 221(g) form?

As per my experience getting VISA is not easy at Chennai consulate, that purely depends on VO mood and our luck. In fact VO did not ask for any documents from the employer like offer letter, tax papers etc. simply issued 221(g) form.

Inhouse project and Client Project.
Hi All,

What is the difference between Inhouse project and Client Project.

My employer told me i'll be working at Inhouse project. Does Inhouse project need client? In other words, is a client required for a Inhouse project?

What shld i say if they ask who is the client?

Thanks for your help
