Nov 24: Returned passport
Jan 4: Was told I'd need to do an in-person interview at the consulate
Feb 24: Had in-person interview with spouse at consulate. Received original marriage certificate back.
March 18: OCI printed
April 21: Received OCI
The consulate was pretty responsive. I didn't think it got worse than CKGS, but VFS proved me wrong. They send canned responses and won't reply to anything until 48 hours later. They also had my OCI for many weeks as you can see and wouldn't mail it to me because of COVID.

I am still waiting for them to dispatch the document from Chicago to VFS and then to me.
The experience for me was all good so far, other than that status at NewDelhi was really slow to update. Get the FedEx service. It will make it easy for you. The uploading documents was the most challenging part; fortunately, I was good at photoshop, so that was not too bad.
Not sure when I will receive the document from now. It seems like Chicago Embassy/Consulate has to send it to VFS, and then VFS has to mail it to me.
I will update you guys as soon as there is an update.

I am posting below some lessons learned the hard way relating to the OCI application process – both new applications and renewals.
As of April 2021, here are the specifications for the file types and sizes
a) Photograph and Signature
Photographs and Signature must be jpg or jpeg files
The maximum file size allowed is 500 KB
Photos must have a height to width ratio of 1:1
Pixel sizes can range from 200 x 200 pixels to 1500 x 1500 pixels
The Signature must have a height to width ratio of 1:3
Pixel sizes can range from 67 x 200 pixels to 500 x 1500 pixels
b) Supporting documents
All supporting documents must be PDF files.
The maximum file size allowed is 1 MB
Note: There is an undocumented and unspecified limit on the length of the file names. If your names are too long, the upload will fail with a message that says “Only PDF files are allowed”! Keep the file names short.
DO NOT be confused by the inconsistent information on the VFS Global website pertaining to these file sizes. Neither VFS nor the Indian Consulate seem to care about these inconsistencies, even though it has been brought to their attention.

Question on notarization of documents
1. Do we need to upload notarized documents on the online Govt. form?
2. For notary of minor's thumb impression, does thee impression need to be stamped in front of the notary or can we just stamp at home and then go to the notary? Want to avoid taking baby outside home.

New OCI application in April 2021 - Unable to upload PDF files
Has anybody succeeded in uploading the PDF files required for a new OCI application on the ociservices.gov.in website in April 2021? Valid and correctly sized PDFs are being rejected with an error message "Only valid PDF file allowed".
