This group has been of the greatest help since I started my journey of the citizenship and green card since 2016 until now, I will share my timeline from the start as it might help someone else with all mistakes I did and all encounters I had to avoid, good luck to everyone :)
11/02/2017: applied for green card (marriage based) with all other applications as work permit and travel permit, combo
12/30/2017: did my fingerprints
03/01/2018: moved from Kansas to Colorado with my wife and informed uscis and changed the address to PO Box as I didn’t have an address back then
04/01/2018: took them a month to change it, in the meantime I got a RFE letter that was sent to my old address and I was so scared, called uscis and talked to a second tier officer who was so mad I moved lol and said I always recommend not to move for situations like this (so keep that in mind, if you are moving, don’t wait last minute to change, change address couple weeks to your anticipated address before you move)
05/02/2018: luckily I received the letter from usps as I changed address, it was asking about something with sponsor and fixed it
05/24/2018: got approved for combo card
10/01/2018: interview notice was sent to mail
11/02/2018: interview date, went with my wife, Colorado Denver field office, officer was so nice, he asked us questions for 4 mins and my wife made a cute comment about his kids pic on the desk so the interview took 45 mins after that talking about life and kids and so on lol, got approved on spot
11/05/2018: received greencard in mail
08/05/2020: applied for I-751 removal of conditions from Florida (we moved there to her birth city, bunch of documents. Over 100 ones lol I am such an OCD too, 2 car financed, bank statements, credit cards, loans, pics, leases for 3 apartments, bills for 2 years, affidavit letters, paystubs same job)
08/30/2020: received fingerprint reuse as it was Covid time and 18 months extension
06/30/2021: received another 24 months extension letter, of course you can imagine the frustration and worry then, it’s normal, don’t be sad we all in the same boat
08/05/2021: applied for N400 Online and submitted the needed evidence, applied with the rule of adjudication of both pending petition (I751) and the N400
06/01/2022: received interview notice letter for 06/30 but was cancelled literally 2 weeks before the interview 6/16 and it was the most depressing thing ever
07/01/2022: received another notice for august 2nd and was so happy
08/02/2022: today, interview went smooth, the minute I got in without even saying anything he started with the test lol I answered all of it and he asked about my wife, asked for a lot of evidence and I was ready for all of that like bills, pics, taxes, all marriage stuff. One thing wasn’t expected in the interview and it’s extremely important and I didn’t know so please pay attention to the following:
If you came to the United States between the age of 18 and 26, even if not on a green card, YOU HAVE TO REGISTER FOR SELECTIVE SERVICES IF YOU ARE PLANNING IMMIGRATION, he asked me in the last 40 questions, did you register for selective services, I could have said yes but I didn’t know what that is and I said no lol, he stopped and said why? And he explained what I said above and said I am sorry then I can’t approve you today, as you are 30, you still need to register until 31, so I’ll send you a letter so you send when you register and it takes around 45 days until we finish that then we will schedule the ceremony, you can imagine how depressed I was in and went through with the rest of the questions, then before leaving he said hold on, considering you are on a 3 years rule, you only required to register until 29 years old and I am 30 now so he said I am past the requirement then and got approved on the spot 😅😅😅😅 but guys pay close attention to that please
08/02/2022: got the ceremony same day and waited around 2 hours until they called me in basically and got the certificate and became a citizen finally 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Couple take aways:
- you aren’t doing anything wrong, you are getting a greencard or a citizenship benefit, never be scared and never lie and it will always be good at the end :)
- When you changing address, please do so 2 weeks at least into your moving date not after it, always before, so you save time if they sent you something in between
- REGISTER FOR SELECTIVE SERVICES IF YOU HAVE BEEN HERE BETWEEN THE AGE 18 and 26, and you are still under 31 years old if not married or 29 if married, if you are past that age, don’t worry then. For example, I came here when I was 24, so that rule applies to me. If you came here after 26 so don’t worry then
- USCIS is time consuming, hugely; so if you keep checking status every minute like me, you’ll literally go crazy (like me too lol) so try to relax and work and get your life together, cause at the end what you build through the years is what matters not that day of the ceremony or the citizenship itself
- I have had uscis encounters through Kansas, Colorado, Florida and kentucky and they all the same, same timeline and all that, so always wait, nothing you can do, just wait and don’t go crazy 😅🤦🏽♂️
Good luck everyone 🙏🙏🙏 and I’ll be here to answer any questions
