B2 Visa Approved after getting rejected twice in Chennai
Hi,

Just wanted to share my parents experience.

Their visa were rejected last year twice in the month of April 2012. Last year my brother who is still studying, my dad who is a state govt employee and 58 yrs old and my mom who is also 58 yrs had been for the interview. I was sponsoring their visa(I am on H1B and married) Normal questions were asked like my dad's income, duration of stay, why they wanted to go to US etc. However the visa was rejected. We guessed it might be because all my family was planning to come and no strong ties back in India. I send them again in two weeks, this time only my mom and father and asked them to mention the same reason in the interview. However it was again rejected. may be it was too early that we applied again

I send them again after a year from their last interview date in May. This time I asked my husband to sponsor and also took a language specific interview so that my parent can explain better in case there are any accent issues

Questions Asked
1. Who live in US
A. Daughter and son in Law. He also quickly answered where we were working.

2. Where do you work and income
A. Dad answered about his job

3. How many children?
A. 2. Son is studying and Daughter in US

Visa Approved.

No questions were asked to mom. No documents verified

I was really worried about them because they has already had two rejections. However things worked out. So people who have had rejections in the past, please try again after giving some gap.

Parents Visitor Visa Exp ( including DS 160 error)
I would like to thank immihelp for giving a detailed decription of entire visa process which helped me in getting my parents visitor visa.

I would liek to share my parents visa exp including DS160 form filling.

DSD-160 form : My mom' surname is blank in her passport & so in the form i kept Surname as FNU & Given Name as YYYY YYYY ..... & got the visa fee paid & even took the appointment but its actually wrong as Surname can never be kept as FNU.... so i called the customer care & believer me they are quite helpful have read that they dont respond on time but frankly speaking through emal they used to revert back in 24 hrs & even through call you may have to wait for sometime.
So they asked me to fill another form & take it along for interview as the 1st form they wont consider as the surname should be your GIVEN NAME & given Name should be FNU....so quickyl i made the changes & asked aprents to carry new form for mom.

At OFC Mumbai : it was a smooth process as they accepted the new form & rest all process was quick.

Next Day Interview :
Questions asked :
1. DO you work with State Govt
Yes
2. What does your son in law & daughter do in US.
SIL working with YYYY company & daughter homemaker
3.Question asked to mom (by Hindi translator) : How many kids do u have ?
1 daughter & 1 son
4. Is ur SIL a US citizen ?
No
5. What's his visa status?
H1( parents actually forgot teh visa status but some how they managed to say its H1)
Then came teh golden words : Your Visa is approved :) Collect your passport in 4 days.

B2 visa renewal experience

I am a retired central Govt employee of 70 years old and with engg / scientific back ground. Myself & my wife ( a home maker) had visa interview at US consulate Chennai in April 2013 for renewal of our B2 tourist visa. We had visited US some half a dozen times with earlier multi-entry visa given for 10 years . For renewal of this visa,we had finger printing taken the previous day. At visa interview the VO asked about my nature of work experience while in service . He asked me how long I am likely to stay at US to which I replied maximum 6 months . He asked whether my wife is employed to which I replied “No, she is a home maker”. He said he is approving my wife’s visa & gave me a pink slip telling me to go to counter 31 as my case requires some admin processing . At counter 31 , an Indian lady officer gave me another pink slip with number of query items listed and asked me to submit answers to applicable items and send the reply by email. Both our passports were collected by her. A case number was written in the pink slip enabling me to track my case status online.

Intially my case status was “Send Information” then changed to “ Pending process” after receipt of my email reply. This status continued for one full month at the end of which the status changed to “Issued” I got an email from consulate saying that our visas are issued and handed over to the courier. We were thrilled and collected the passports at local VFC office. To our surprise, when we checked the entries in the passports , we find that I have been issued visa for one year only and my wife was given a 10 year visa. I do not know the reason for the differential decision . I am 70 years old, was having 10 year visa to be renewed and made number of trips with no violation of over stay etc. Still the VO renewed my visa only for one year, reason unknown . This means I have to go through this cycle again after one year, if I have to renew again.

2. Who is there? - Second daughter. (Rendavadhu ponnu)
3. Both the daughters are there? (Rendu ponnuma?) - No no. Second daughter. First daughter is settled in Chennai.
4. Got any sons? No
5. What is your son-in-law doing? Company name and position.

To dad.
1. What do you do? Retired bank manager.
2. Pensioner? Yes.
3. Got any property in India? Yes

Our Visa Exp - B2
Hi,

I already hold a B1/B2 visa that I got while working for an MNC. My brother who lives in the US wanted us to come over for a month and I had to apply for a B2 visa for my wife and my daughter who is 4 years old.

I just want to mention one issue we had and I hope many visiting this page will not make the same mistake. I did not find this info on any of the help pages(or may have missed) and I hope that this will be helpful for many people.

On my daughters passport the Surname column was left blank and in the Given name her name was entered as YYYY XX YYYY YYYY YYYY .

Surname:_______________________
Given Name : YYYY XX YYYY YYYY YYYY

So, while filling out her application we entered the Surname column as FNU. When I submitted her application it came like this

Name Provided: FNU, YYYY XX YYYY YYYY YYYY .

This is a huge mistake. Please Note that if you do not have any Surname, please fill in your Given name in the Surname column. and in the Given name column enter it as FNU. When you submit you application it MUST READ as follows

Name Provided: YYYY XX YYYY YYYY YYYY , FNU

The OFC center which reviews your application will ask you to make the change and come back when they see this erroe.

Finding a cyber cafe near the OFC center to make this change was another big ordeal. None of the Auto drivers will want to tell you were the closest Browsing center is located. I some how asked a few locals and found a browsing center 1KM away from the OFC in Chennai.

The Cyber cafe manager was very helpful and knew exactly what to do. He also told me that more that 30 people come to him almost everyday with the same mistake of FNU.

Once this change was made the rest of the process was a breeze. If you are travelling with a minor child on a tourist visa (Non Immigrant), you will have to visit the OFC along with your child. However, you need not take the child with you into the consulate for your interview. My daughter stood outside with me while my wife carried her application and passport along with her's into the consulate. My wife also carried my passport and a photocopy of my US visa into the consulate. They did ask for my visa and my wife presented only the photocopy.

Most of the questions that were asked were the usual questions such as

1. Why do you want to go to the USA
2. Who is sponsoring you
3. What does the sponsor do
4 What does your Husband do
5. What is his income
6 Does he have a Visa
7 Can I See it

Verified my visa and it was done.

Answer to the point and be confident.

All the very best!
