Hi All,
Parents got visitor visa yesterday in Chennai Consulate.

Had 8 and 8:30 AM appointments, were there on time and came out around 12:00 PM.

Questions asked..
1) How many children do you have?
-- XX. 2 of my siblings are back in india and I guess that sealed the case.
2) Why are you going to USA?
  - Visit NY, Niagara Falls etc

Officer joked are you not going to visit your son. Officer smiled and said we are giving you visa and we will mail you your passport.

I am surprised as to what their criteria is if they don't even check the financial capacity of the sponsor. May be they pulled my INS/IRS records based on DS156. Anyways it was more easy than expected...

For readers of this web site .. Please treat the documentation/questions/samples on immihelp as one stop for parents visa purposes. I had some info from frieds/others before I landed on this web site but just followed the instructions/check list's provided on immihelp and it helped a lot.

Good Luck.

My parents went for visitors visa on 20th (friday).

Age: 60+ retired.

Questions:
1. How many kids? 2
2. Where are they? (2 cities in the US).
3. When both are there what are you doing here? (state govt pension holder, aged mother is here, we have property..)
4. Are both your kids green card holders? (Son is).
5. When did they go to US?
6. Have you visited before? How long did you stay?
7. When do you want to go to US?
8. When will you return?

You are granted visa. But make sure you dont overstay otherwise it will be cancelled.

No documents were checked. Vo was a 30~35 year old male.

They collected passport on Tuesday evening (Apr 24).

My parents said that there was a dad ahead of them in queue who wanted to visit his child in the US. He had come alone for visitor's visa. The VO asked him why his wife didnt accompany him. He did not know how to answer the question and the VO had to repeat it multiple times. Finally the VO denied his visa even though the applicant had many ties back home like other kids and wanted to go for just 3 months. A little preparation would have avoided the unfortunate denial.

Good luck! Thanks to all those who answer questions/share experiences in this forum.

Visiting Visa help
Hi all,

My father-in-law went to Chennai consulate last month, he has only son but stays in combined family with his brothers. But his visa got rejected and got the rejection reason as 214(b).

Here are the questions what they had asked.
V.O: How many children do you have.
My F.I.L: One son.

V.O: Does your son sends the money for your living.
F.I.L said: No.
( Do you think answer would have been 'Yes' here?)V.O: Do you get the pension?
He replied "No" as he took VRS he wont get pension.

V.O: I don't find any reason why you will come back to India.
My Father-in-law replied that i stay in combined family and i have to look over the family... i should come back.

But V.O said "No sir we cant give you the visa, your son should come and take you". I am not sure how this works out and why did the V.O said like this.

Now again he is planning to apply for visa after 2 months, then my husband was planning to show him as working in some company as accountant. Does this help? or can he say that he also has a daughter? or any other clue to work out in this situation?

Please advice.

Parents and Grand Mother got 10 YR M Entry Visa from Mumbai - 2nd Attempt
I thank you all and especially my cousin, who referred me to www.Immihelp.com for the wealth of information that helped with preparation for the visitor’s visa for my parents & grand mother, both paperwork and interview. Keep up the good work.

FLASH BACK
1st time Application -- Result: Refusal
My Parents and Grand Mother were refused a visitor visa under Section 214(b) in May 2005. I had sent my wife’s & mine invitation documents for them, the reason given was not enough family ties back in India and you will stay with your son and daughter-in-law permanently and will not come back to India.

CURRENT
2nd time Application -- Result: 10 Year Multiple Entry Visa
My parents had the visitor visa interview in Gujarati (our mother tongue) at Mumbai Consulate on April 13, 2007 at 10:00AM. They were at the consulate by 8:30 AM. They were called in for the security check between 11:30 AM & 12:00 PM. Rest everything is mentioned in the below steps.

- Once they entered the building, all their documents (Passport, Form I-156, Form I-157, Appointment Letter, Visa Fee Receipt, etc.) were checked.
- They pass through the screening process.
- Finger prints were taken of the INDEX FINGER of both the hands.
- They were asked, which language do they want their interview in (Gujarati).
- Once security was cleared and the documents checked, they were allowed to the main building / room where they waited in line for the interview for 30-45 minutes.

NOTE:
Because my Grand Mother (Age 65+) was there with my parents, they were given priority to finish the process and enter the building.

Visa Officer (VO) asked very few questions to my parents (DAD) (especially my father). VO was very friendly lady and directed the questions. She only looked and smiled at them when they greeted her at the beginning of the interview, but otherwise she was checking constantly in the computer and asking questions. Questions asked were:

DAD: Good Afternoon Madam.
VO: Good Afternoon, how are you doing?

DAD: we are fine and how about you?
VO: I am fine, thanks.

VO: Why do you want to go to USA?
DAD: We want to go to USA to meet my son and daughter – in – law and for tourism purposes.

VO: What does your son do?
DAD: Job.

VO: What is his designation?
DAD: YYYY YYYY

VO: How many kids do you have?
DAD: I have 2 sons, one is in USA (Me) and 1 is in India.

VO: What are their names?
DAD: Elder son’s name is YYYY & Younger son’s name is ZZZ.

VO: Did you apply in 2005?
DAD: Yes

VO: Were you refused the Visitor’s Visa?
DAD: Yes

VO: What was the reason of rejection?
DAD: While he was answering the question, VO interrupted him and asked another question and my dad did not finish his answer.

VO: Was I there at the time on your visa refusal? (Smiling)
DAD: No

VO: Ok, I am granting you visa but make sure you don’t stay there for more than 6 months.
DAD: Thank you very much.

VO didn’t see ANY SINGLE other documents. She told them they would get their passports in 2-3 days. My Dad stood in the line at the VFS Center in the evening where they give out passports with issued visa between 5:30 & 6:00PM on the same day and if you are not there to collect the passport, they will courier it to your home address on the application. He only received my Grand Mother’s passport and they told him that my Dad’s & Mom’s passports will be received within next 2-3 days. They received their passport on Tuesday afternoon and were happy to see it was a 10 year multiple entry visa.

ISSUE:
The only issue I had in preparing the paperwork for sponsor was that my bank (Citibank) took a long time about 15 days from when I ordered it 1st time to mail the account verification letter. Please NOTE if you are banking with Citibank, order these letters well in advance. I ordered it from one of the Citibank branch location in Santa Clara, CA and waited for a week as they mentioned it will take 5 business days. I called them after a week and they mentioned that the letters were mailed to me through USPS First Class Mail on the next day of my order. So the Customer Service Rep. ordered another set of letters to be mailed out to me through UPS 2nd Day. I waited 3-5 days and did not receive it. I called them again and fought with them on Friday morning and the lady rep. was very co-operative and I talked with their Senior Manager and he made sure that I receive those letters on Monday. Finally I received letters on Tuesday. It was surprising that they would need that much time to prepare the letters, so please prepare accordingly.

One strange thing is that I received the ORIGINAL set of letters, which were sent to me the 1st time after a month in the mail.

I hope my experience helps all of the www.Immihelp.com users to prepare documents as well as their loved ones. Also make sure they (Family Members who are visiting) know what all things u have mentioned in the invitation documents, so that there are no conflicts in their answers.

I am sure my experience will help others in preparation. But at any time, if anybody has questions, please email me at [email protected].

Cheers to every www.immihelp.com users.
Once again thanks to www.immihelp.com

Visitors Visa interview
I wish to record my appreciation for all the details provided by immihelp.com. Thak you. It made it really easy to prepare for the interviw. Your website is a confidence booster.

I work for a leather goods exporter.

I took the visa interview at Chennai on 10APR2007.
One of the consulate staff called 'MARK' came to us waiting in long que's and addressed all of us and spoke to us in a easy manner telling us that proper filling of the application forms and clear answers to the qustions of the interviewer would get us the visa in approximately 3 minutes. He claimed that he has done visa interviews for the past 15 years and could decide on issuing a visa in the first 20 seconds of the interview. He suggested being polite and cheerful during the interview. After all they too were involved in a tedious job he said. He also very clearly said that they didnot have the time to read all the "Maha Baratha" - meaning all the paper proofs and evidences we think are necessary - which we bring in our plastic bags. (He also observed that the color of the bag is usually red).

When my turn came, this is the way it went:
Officer: Hi how are you?
Me: Hi how are you doi'n?
Off: You have a lot of things to do when you get there!
Me: (In the application form, in the column for reason for visit I had written - TOURISM. VISITING COSIN'S FAMILY. TO FIND NEW MARKETS FOR LEATHER GOODS).So I replied - "When I asked my boss for leave he wanted me to market our products in the US."
Off: How are you going to do that?
Me: By talking to people!
Off: What does your cousin do?
Me: He works for the Arc of Dallas.
Off: What's that?
Me: It is a charitable organisation helping disabled children.
There was a pause.
Off: You'r visa is approved and you'll get your passport in a few days. Have a nice day.
Me: Thank you and have a nice day too.

Please note that he didnot ask to see any proof. Not even the sponsor/invitaion which I had with me besides loads of other stuff.
Thanks once again.
John P. Charles.

Parents got 10 years visitor's visa in 2nd attempt
Hi all,

First of all thanks to this great website for providing all the useful information. Also, thanks to all those who have shared their experiences. The questions & answers shared by everyone on this site helped me prepare my parents for their interview.

My parents had their interview on 15th March at the Mumbai consulate. The VO was a very friendly lady except that her accent was hard to understand. So, thanks to the interpreter.
Following questions were asked:

1. Why do you want to go to U.S.?
2. Who lives in U.S.?
3. What does your son-in-law do?
4. What does your daughter do?
5. How did your son-in-law go to U.S.? Do they have green card?
6. What are you doing at present/qualification?
7. My parents are also visiting my sister in London. So the VO asked why are you going to London?
8. Why do you want to come back to India?

My dad answered all the questions appropriately. No questions were asked to my mom. Finally the VO said, she is issuing them the visa but don't overstay beacuse you might have trouble going next time if you do or if you have to apply for a green card.
