They had asked for a Marathi Translator. Due this their interview took place at 4:00pm where as the appointment was for 11:30am.

The inteviewer asked the following questions:
1. Whom are you visting in the US?
2. With whom are you going to stay?
3. What does your son in law do?
4. May I see his employer verification letter.
5. What do you do?
6. Who will take care of your business while you are gone? - answer brother
7. Is it a joint business?
8. May I see your daughter's and son-in-law's green card copy?
9. May I see your daughter's passport copy?

Thats it...phew!!!
Visa granted.
Received the passport in 2 days with 10years stamp.

Parents got visa in second attempt at Mumbai consulate
My parents visa was rejected in oct under the section 214(b).The questions asked in the First attempt were:-
Q1.Who will u be visiting in US?....daughter
Q2. What does ur son-in-law do?.....s/w engg.
Q3.Does ur daughter have US citizenship?
A.No, but our son-in-law's greencard has been approved.
Q4.What do u do?(this Q was asked to my father?)
A.I am a Retired Engineer and right now draw a pension
Q5.How many other children do u have?
A. A daughter and a son.
Q6.What does he do?
A.He is working .

Thats it, the the counseler said I am not convinced that u will come back and hence the visa was rejected.I think the answer to the Q.3 should have been just "No"....but since it ws the first experience my parents probably did not think that there was any harm in elaborating further .So "to the point" replies sometimes r more beneficial.
My parents reapplied within 3 days.In the second attempt following Q were asked:-This time my parents went for a marathi translator

Q1.Who will u be visiting in US?....daughter
Q2.For how many days do u wish to visit US?....10weeks
Q3.What does ur son in law do?.....s/w engg.
Q4.Where does he work?
Q5.How many other children do u have?....daughter and son
Q6.What does ur son do?....working
Q7.What is the annual income of ur son-in-law as well as ur son?
Q8.My dad was asked...What do u do?.....Retired
Q9.What is your highest qualification?.....engineer
Q10.Which field of engineering?
Q11.Where did u work?....govt. job

And they were told u have been given the visa.....
NONE of the docs that my parents carried were seen by the counseler.
I would suggest all those who did not get the visa in the first attempt ,not to lose heart and to give it another try.

Thanks for the list, 'Expectant Mom'!
Thanks for the list. I copied it and personalised it for my situation. I'm hoping to get both of my parents here for a brief visit. My mother was here about 5 yrs. ago and left well before her visa expired. But I'm nervous this time around.

Thanks again.

Reply to Nervous Applicant with sample questions
Sure ! I can post the questions that I prepared. You can customise it according to one's situation.
By the way, my mother received her passport after stamping, the next day (Nov 9) itself. She has got a 10 year multiple entry visa.
I have excluded the questions that were not applicable in my mother's case and some personal questions that were applicable only in our case.

Here are questions:

1. Where in US are you going?
2. What is the purpose of your trip?
3. What are the places you are going to visit?
4. Have you been to the U.S. before?
5. How many children do you have?
6. Where are your children and what do they do?
7. Who is there in US and from how long?
8. Your children living in India, do they have kids?
9. How old is your grandkid in India?
10.What is the DOB of your daughter?
11.What does your son-in-law do in USA?
12.How long it's been you have seen your daughter?
13.Where do ur daughter & son-in-law work?
14.How long do you intend to stay?
15.Does your daughter work?
16.Does the daughter you are visiting have any children?
(If it is a "No" Just say no and don’t say that she’s now only pregnant.)
17.What is your son-in-law’s date of birth?
18.Who is sponsoring you?
19.When did your husband retire?
20.How much pension does he get?
21.Do you have relatives in the US? If yes, who?
22.Where will you stay in the US?(Specify the address also.)
23.How much does your son-in-law earn?
24.Which visa is your daughter and son-in-law on?
25.Did your son/daughter study in the US? Where?
26.What visa did your daughter and son-in-law enter the U.S. on?
27.When do you plan to travel?
28.Will your wife/husband accompany you on your trip?
29.Why isn’t your husband joining you?
30.Doesn't the father want to see his daughter?
31.When did you get married?
32.Why do you want to travel at this time (winter)?
33.Have you blocked your tickets?
34.Do you have return air tickets, medical insurance etc.
35.How much expense do you expect from this trip?
36.When is your husband’s birthday?
37.Have you been outside India before?
38.Can’t you finish your visit earlier? Why do you want to stay for so long?
39.What is the guarantee that you will come back?
40.When did you last see your daughter?
41.When did your daughter last visit India?
42.When does your son/daughter plan to visit India next?
43.Where do you stay in India?
44.Will you work in the US?
45.When is your daughter’s wedding anniversary?
46.Can you tell me your son-in-law/daughter's contact details?
47.Show me your documents OR Has your daughter sent any documents?
(Show documents.)

Who is coming from India for you? Though I prepared my mom to answer all these questions, she was asked questions which we didn't predict. Somehow at that moment, she was quite bold to do it on her own, which I didn't expect at all. So I guess its sheer luck. Confidence in answering goes a long way too.
Wish you all the best. Share your experience too. Others will be willing to help with whatever information you want.
Bye for now.

visitor visa extn approved - sample letter and docs
hi all, i am sharing the following info for all, i am sure it helps:

my parents came to US in mar2004, got 6 mon entry. 6-mo extn filed early aug, website showed approval late sept, approval letter recd early oct. they have come to US 2 times earlier (2000 for 1 month and late 2002 for 5 mo). Note that we sent photocopy of I-94, NOT the original.

DOCUMENTS SENT WITH APPLICATION:
3 LETTERS: 1 from my father requesting extn, 1 from me saying I will take them around and will support them, and 1 similar letter from my brother.
Notarized affidavit of support (Form I-134)
Employment Verification
Bank statements indicating availability of funds.
Recent pay-stubs
2003 W-2 and Tax return
Proof of property ownership (of my parents) in India (I THINK THIS IS THE KEY BECAUSE IT SHOWS TIES WITH INDIA.)
Copy of return ticket (valid for 1 yr)
Invitation letter from my younger son to visit the east coast of USA

TEXT OF THE LETTERS: "My parents have come to visit me and see various places of interest in USA. Due to my pre-occupation with the job commitments, I have not been able to take them to places outside of bay area such as Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, Lake Tahoe, Grand Canyon, Reno and other places of interest in the neighboring states like Nevada and Oregon. To visit these places, my parents are dependent upon me due to the language constraint. As I work on a full-time basis, I am not able to take long vacation. So, I have to use weekends to accompany them to visit these places. Also, due to their age, my parents cannot visit all these places in a short period of time in a package tour, as it would be too constraining and hectic for them."

"We are culturally and emotionally very much tied to India. We also own property in India that we need to take care of. We assure you that we will leave the USA before the expiration of authorized stay."

good luck to all,
cooldesi

My mother got her visa at Chennai - First Attempt
Thanks to Immihelp.
I have been going through this site for the past six months. I prepared the documents according to this site and read all the experiences and topics in Discussion Forum. Accordingly, I sent the documents to my mom, prepared a 5 page questionnaire collecting the questions posted by different people from this site.
She is from Chennai. She went there on 8 Nov, at 10:30 a.m. They collected the passport, DS-156 and web appointment receipt, asked her to pay the visa application DD and gave her a token. SHe waited for 10 minutes and then she was called. She had requested a tamil translator. And for everybody's information, there is no chair while the officer asks questions. Everybody stands including the translator. She was asked these questions:
1) Where in US are you going?
She said New York.
2) How long are your daughter and son in law there in US?
3) For how many months have you applied ?
6 months, if you could issue visa.
4) Why do you want 6 months?
5) Who are there with you in chennai?
6) How old is your grand daughter in chennai?
7) How many family members are there in your daughter's family?
She thought they were asking about my in-law's, so she said "six".
For this, the officer himself reframed the question again : how many members in your daughter's family in New York? Then she said : two. Daughter and my son - in-law. Thats it.
8) Why isn't your husband joining you for US?
9) Doesn't your husband want to meet his daughter?
After she answered all these questions, the translator said, the passport will be couriered to you. Please pay the money and go.
We are waiting for the passport to come. None of the documents was seen. I had sent one big bunch of documents. But he didn't ask a single thing from it. Only her visa application was taken.
Reading the experiences of different people helped a lot. My mother was more confident than me. That helped too. For some questions, she was on her own, I have not thought about those questions at all.
Thanx to all.

question by mm visitor visa
take evidence of immovable property in India like deeds to a house or land, plus letter from employer here showing your job will be held for you, salary stubs and bank account with as large a balance as you can manage. have brother provide notarized letter of support including bank statement and salary stubs. Basically the evidence you show here has to be fixed in india to prove you are returning. perhaps you have recently become engaged and your fiance is waiting for your return so the marriage can be fixed? That would help.
