Visitor Visa - B2

My mom went for the interview on July 27, 2004 and got a 10 year multiple entry vistor's visa.

She was rejected once before. She used to work then and wanted to come and spend a month with me. They rejected her under potential immigrant clause. She is a widow and i am her only son.

She reapplied again after she retired , and this time she showed that she is a pension earner and has a property in chennai.

Also last time when she took the interview , she asked for an interpreter(even though she knew to speak english she was worried abt the accent etc) , but this time she did not and she felt the person interviewing her was really nice and spoke in such a way she understood everything.

The questions asked to here were

1. What is your son doing.
2. How long you intended to stay - she replied 6 months
3. What are you doing now - she replied back that she is a retired bank employee and she earns a pension. She specified that she also has a house in her name.

Her visa was approved.


From my side , i sent her an invitation letter mentioning that where all i am planning to take her(tourist places) etc.

My parents requested 4 months visa and they got 6 Months visa.
Following questions were asked to my Father:
(1)How many children do you have? What do they do?
(2)What do you do?
(3)What is your annual income? My father is retired officer. So he told his pension per annum.
(4)Show me your affidavit of support
Consulate officer didn't ask any question to my mother.

I graduated in the spring quarter and I am currently working in my OPT. Also my H1 is under processing. I might or might not be able to get my H1 papers by the 1st week of October. It could be late also.
My mom's appointment is fixed during the last last week of October and my dad is a bank employee.
How are the chances of my mom getting her visa as I am working on my OPT and I might or might not get the papers by the end of Oct? What are the other possibilities?

My father's visa got rejected 5th time(twice applied for business purpose and 3 times for tourist purpose) and my mother's 3rd time(all the time for tourist purpose). My brother is having convocation on August 6th and they applied to attend for that purpose. The visa officer asked questions to only my father.for the letter from my brother's university, my brother's passport copy. My parents submitted both. Then they asked for the I.T returns, my father gave the I.T returns of 2 yrs. The visa officer asked my father's personal income, my father mentioned his personal income and the visa got rejected under section 214b.

This time they had no reason whatsoever to reject the visa.

They mention their stay to be just 6 weeks. I had send mine and my husband's passport copy, sponsorship letter, Affidavit of support, letter to the consulate requesting to issue the visa, invitation letter for my parents, invitation letter from my brother to attend convocation ceremony,his passport copy, letter from his university, my bank statements,pay stubs, employer letter, Every possible document.

I am soo confused and frustrated, not able to understand and figure out how to get visa for my parents.

My parents were asked where my husband and i work. They were also asked how many children they have and where they all live. They did not look any any documents at all. And they also asked for how long they intend to visit USA. My parents requested a 6 month visa and they got 10 years visa. My father had lived in the US in the 60's and so the officer at the consulate asked my father where he worked and which university he studied at (my father has lived for 10 years in USA in 1960's). I am working with an Indian Software Company as a Software Engineer, our company has branch office in CA.
Company invite me to come to USA for training and fax the letter for the same.
Company has given me the letter that they are going to pay for the trip and all the stuff and has to stay for 9 weeks.

I got the appointment on 19th Jul-2004
Counsular officer ask me the question..
1)Since how long u have been with this company ?
2)What is purpose of visit ?
3)whats your compa strength in USA/Delhi ?
4)Whats is your presen salary and how much exp. you have ?

Finally they told me that "Sorry i cant issue you, Not satisfied with your company profile"

I am surprise that on 9th july one of my colleague got the visa with same documents and his profile is just similar to me , both of us are working on same project.

Could you please any body tell me, what could have been the reason.

So many guys are going and coming back fom my office time to time, although some guys has ben rejected before me.

On July 1, all three of them applied for visitor visas through drop box. They did not get visas under Section 221(g). We had supplied all the required documents. The consular has asked them to appear in person for visa.

My parents and sister got 10 year multiple entry visitor visa at Mumbai Consulate.

The following information is with respect to the above mentioned questions and is useful for the applicants who have been requested to appear in person under section 221(g) at Mumbai consulate.

I had sent an e-mail asking above mentioned questions to the following addresses.

Based on their replies and our experience, we have following information to share with you. Please note we had applied for visitor visas through drop box. We were told to appear in person in a letter that stated visa ineligibility under section 221(g). Our passports were returned with a stamp on the last page.

1) We were not required to take an appointment through VFS. We were told to appear at the consulate office any business day at 10.30 am.

2) We were not required to fill DS 156 again. The old DS 156 that we had supplied with our application at the time of drop box application was still valid.

3) We were not required to pay the application fees again. Note that we had paid visa application fees at the time of drop box application. We were told to carry only visa issuance fee drafts with us.

3) From above 1, 2 and 3 we have concluded that visa rejection under section 221(g) is not actually "rejection". It is visa ineligibility. It means the consular is unable to determine the outcome of the visa application at that time. The possible reasons are, missing documents or personal appearance required.

4) We were told to collect our passports at the consulate office the next day. This follows from the fact that the logistic fees paid at the time of drop box application had been used for delivering the passports. They will not deliver the passports twice for the fees we paid. Also note that VFS at Mumbai will not provide any service since we did not have an appointment. If you want service then you have to purchase tickets.

My sister is young, unmarried and medical student. She still manage to got 10 years multiple entry visas along with my parents. I know it is hard to get visitors visas for young people but as in her case, its not impossible. One has to prepare all the documents very well and answer all the questions in a convincing manner with full confidence.

My parents received 10 yrs multiple entry visa. Thanks for all those who posted their comments.

My parents went for their visitor visa yesterday to the Mumbai consulate and they got rejected. Some background: My husband is sponsorer, my brother is also here as a Student, my father has retired and is now working as a consultant in the same company and my mother is a housewife.

These were the questions asked to my father, no questions asked to my mother:
Officer: Are u going for the first time to US
Reply:yes.

Officer: where are you working
Reply: so-and-so company.

Officer: what do they manufacture
Reply: so-and-so

Officer: what does your daughter do
Reply: she is a home maker.

Offier: what does your son-in-law do
Reply: he works as a xxxx with xxxx.

Officer: show me the affadavit of support
my father showed the paper to him

Officer: who else is there in US
reply: My son and he is studying

Officer: which univeristy?
Reply: xxxx in xxxx

Officer: do you have only two children?
reply: yes


After that the officer told him that there is no positive reason for returning back to India. My father told him that he has an affidavit showing his interest in coming back with property, income and other bank balances.
But he told this does not prove for him to on positive thinking that they will return to India.

My father also told him that he am working with a firm and he has to return back but this did not convince him.

Finally my father asked what can do further.
He replied that he can reapply for visa.


we had prepared all documents based on immihelp.com and my father has his letter of employment, property papers, affidavit, our letters addressed to the consulate, invitation letters and everything.

My parents had applied for B2 visa in May. I am the only son but my parents have some propeties and several brothers and sisters and my father is still working. So I was very confident but was in for a shock when they got rejected.

On the day they went to interview for the first time, they were asked whether they could speak English in the front counter in Chennai and they had said yes and so they were set up for English interview although they had requested Tamil.

they collected only my passport copy and Affidavit of support and returned all other documents at the front counter.

Before the interview they were adviced to be short and to the point in answering.

The following questions were asked.

1. how many kids do you have? 1
2. Who lives with you? None. only us.
3. What about your parents? (to my father). They are no more.
4. What about your wife's parents? They are alive and are old.
5. Where do they live? trichy.
6. Do you work? yes
7. What is your salary? YYYY
8. Why you didnt go to US earlier? (this my father may have answered differently) My father was alive and we had to take care of him.
9. How many months do you need? 4 months.

Thats it. Interview over and they got rejected.

I had given up hope as the appointment dates were available only in August and I didnt know what else to do. Then i heard about the congressman/senator letter and decided to try it.

I booked the appointment in August and went after the congressman. It was quite easy. I just searched in google and found my local congressman. State senators will not be able to help as it is a federal issue though I am not sure about it. And there were only 2 federal senators for Massachusetts.

I called their office and they said they will send me a form (authorization to disclose info) and asked me to add some details in the form. I did not get the details for few days.( I called on Thursday and it came to me on next thursday). Being impatient I wrote a letter to the congressman about the various ties my parents had and why they would return to US much in the same format as the letter written to the consulate. I also attached a document with details of the my parents including passport number, Date of Birth, Date they went to apply, Consulate location, Reason for rejection and some of my details about work, phone number etc and faxed it to them.

The entire process of getting the letter took 1 month. They first sent the letter to State department. It took a week to get the reply. Then they sent an email to consulate requesting details of rejection. They just wanted to make sure that there is no security risk. The consulate took 3 weeks to respond and the congressman's office reminded them one more time after the second week.

Once they got the reply, it took them two days to write a letter and they faxed it to consulate and one to me. I faxed it to my parents.

In the meantime I was checking the TTs website daily on all the time I was awake. To my surprise quite a few days became open. But until I got the letter I couldnt fix anything. Finally I fixed it on July 14th.

This time they took the same documents except I had sent a different letter addressed to them and the consulate which stated their ties. They also took the congressman letter with them.

This time in the front counter, they requested all the US documents, i.e. the documents sent by me. And my parents kept the congressman letter in the top. Also this time they requested Tamil.

This time the interview was short and mostly about what I do in US and some details like that and they were granted Visa.

i believe the Congressman letter helped a bit but I cannot be sure. in my case the congressman sent couple of emails and then a support letter and I believe they would have marked it against my parents visa application.

It is easy to get the letter and it doesnt hurt and so you can always try it.
