Documents for India Visa
To obtain a visa to India, you must complete the following documents:
  1. Application forms:
    You must complete the application online. After the application has been completed, you must print and sign the application. This form is bar coded and will store your information securely for faster processing.

    Handwritten forms or downloaded fillable forms are NOT acceptable.

    Name and other relevant information should be filled in as per details in the passport in expanded form.

    Incomplete or illegible applications will not be processed.

  2. Passports:
    Passports must have a minimum validity of 6 months from the date of application with at least two blank visa pages. The last two amendment pages are not acceptable. You must submit an original passport, not a copy.

    Dual citizenship:
    If you have dual citizenship with the U.S. and another country, you must apply using your U.S. passport.

    Exception: If you hold a dual citizenship with Pakistan, you must apply for a visa on your Pakistani passport unless you can show proof that you have renounced your Pakistani citizenship and can provide a renunciation certificate. Absence of Pakistani passport or an expired Pakistani passport is not considered proof of renunciation of Pakistani nationality. When applying for the visa on the Pakistani passport,
    you must submit the Special Pakistan Application.

  3. Photographs:
    Two recent identical passport-size photographs (black/white or color) depicting a front pose against a light background.

    Exception: Citizens of Pakistan must submit 4 photos.

  4. Proof of address:
    You must submit a photocopy of proof of residence/address that matches the present address on the visa application exactly.

    You can submit a photocopy of state issued ID (Driver's License or ID), major utility bill (Water, Gas, Electric, Sewage) or a copy of a lease must be submitted.

    Cell phone bill, credit card statement or bank statement are not accepted as the proof of address. The address cannot be a PO Box. A photocopy of proof of residence/address. Photocopy of driver's license or utility bill is acceptable.

    For minor children, a parent's or guardian's proof of address may be submitted instead.

    If you are student currently enrolled in an university in another state away from your permanent address, you should apply to the jurisdiction where you are currently residing. If your driver's license is not from the state that you are currently studying/residing, you can submit a copy of your student ID and a letter from your school confirming that you are currently enrolled, the address that the school has on record of your dormitory or apartment, on official letterhead and with a signature from an authorized representative from the admissions office or student services department.

    If you are active duty military stationed overseas, you should send a copy of your military identification card.

  5. For minors only (Under 18) - Photocopy of birth certificate:
    Depending on your nationality at birth, the following documents are accepted:
    • U.S.: Birth certificate only.

    • India: Birth certificate, old Indian passport or school leaving certificate.

    • All Others: Birth certificate or any government document from the country of origin that has parents name, date of birth and nationality. It must be translated into English and notarized. If you don't already have the birth certificate, you will have to contact the government of your country of origin to obtain a birth certificate or any government document from the country of origin that has parents name, date of birth and nationality.


  6. Minor applicants:
    For minor applicants (under the age of 18 years), submit a copy of the vital page(s) containing the picture and signature page of both parents' signed passports.

  7. Supporting documents:
    • Business Visa

    • Conference Visa:
      • Invitation letter:
        Letters of invitation from the organizer of the conference in India, as well as the organization in the USA that nominated the applicant to attend the conference.

        You must produce an invitation to a conference or seminar or workshop being organized in India by a Ministry or Department of the Government of India, State Governments, Public Sector Undertakings, Central Educational Institutions, Public Funded University or an organization owned and controlled by the Government of India or State Government, UN or its specialized agencies and reputed NGOs.

        In the case that conference or seminar or workshop is being organized in India by private companies, a 3-month single entry business visa may be issued instead of a conference visa.

      • Additional information form:
        Applicants from Afghanistan, China, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, Sudan, foreigners of Pakistani origin and Stateless persons should fill out the Additional information form. Such applicants and those visiting restricted/protected areas can expect approval to take several weeks.

    • Employment Visa

    • Missionary Visa:
      • Sponsor letter:
        Three copies of the letter from the sponsoring organization indicating intended destination in India, expected length of stay, and nature of work to be discharged should be attached along with a guarantee for applicant's maintenance while in India.

    • Research Visa:
      • Proforma:
        A Proforma (seven sets) should be filled and submitted along with the visa application.

      • Foreign professors/Scholars:
        The applicant should have an invitation from a central education institution or publicly funded State University.

      • Foreign participants attending conferences or Seminars or Workshops:
        The applicant will have to produce an invitation to a conference or seminar or workshop being organized in India by any Ministry/Department of the Government of India, State Governments, Public Sector Undertakings, Central Education Institutions, Public-funded Universities or an organization owned and controlled by the Government of India or State Governments, United Nations or its Specialized Agencies and NGO. The decision of granting visas in this category rests with the Mission.


    • Student Visa:
      • Admission letter:
        A letter confirming admission from a recognized institution along with evidence of financial arrangements for a stay in India.

      • Medical or paramedical courses:
        In cases of admission in medical or paramedical courses in India, a letter of approval or a no objection certificate from the Ministry of Health, Government of India, is required.

      • Engineering or Technical graduate courses:
        For admission to graduate (bachelor's) or post-graduate (master's) courses in engineering/technical institutions in India, a letter of approval or a no objection certificate from the Ministry of Human Resources Development (Department of Education) is required.

    • Tourist Visa:
      None

    • Transfer of Visa:
      Old Passport: The old passport with the Indian visa. Must be the original passport, not a copy.

    • Transit Visa:
      • Airline Ticket: Confirmed airline ticket for onward journey.
      • Valid Visa: Valid visa for final destination.

    • Re-Entry Permission:
      Those who have a valid tourist visa and would like permit to re-enter India within 2 months of the last exit should fill the re-entry permission form. This form will automatically get generated as part of the application process. After printing, answer the questions not covered by the online application form, and then sign.

    • Medical Visa:
      • Medical certificate:
        A certificate of preliminary medical advice from the country of origin/country of residence that shows the applicant has been advised to go for specialized medical treatment.

        In cases where the applicant desires to go for treatment under the Indian system Medicine, the case may also be considered.

    • Medical Attendant Visa:
      • Passport copy of Medical visa applicant:
        A copy of the passport of the person who is applying for a Medical Visa. Additionally, a copy of the Medical Visa if it has already been issued.

      • Proof of relationship:
        A certificate issued by the government, such as birth or marriage certificate, showing relationship between the applicant and the person granted a medical visa.

      • Medical reports;
        The medical reports on the basis of which the medical visa was granted.

        If there has been any updates on the medical condition, please enclose those documents too.

  9. Persons of Indian Origin:
    Persons of Indian origin applying for a visa for the FIRST time on a US passport must submit their Indian passport and a completed Renunciation Form along with the application form for cancellation and return. The second page of the form needs to be filled out and signed by anyone other than the applicant and then it needs to be notarized.

  10. The foreign national must have a valid travel document and a re-entry permit, if required under the law of the country of residence.

  11. Additional requirements for non-U.S. Citizens:
    • Applicants who are not U.S. citizens, but hold a long term U.S. visa or green card, should submit a copy of the visa or the green card.

    • Applicants who are not citizens/residents of the USA and hold a tourist or other short-term USA visa should normally apply for Indian visas in the country of their permanent residence. In case of emergency or special circumstances, an application can be made at the Indian Embassy/Consulate in USA. In addition to the relevant visa fee, there is a reference fee of $20.00 for reference to be made to the country of their original residence. The processing time in such cases is usually 5-7 working days.
