L1B Visa Reject - Chennai 13 Dec
HI All,.

Ok.. here are some observations from my interview. Please note that I am a reject case and I can only share what went wrong. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED, THERE ARE A LOT OF SUCCESSFUL CASES TOO.

1) Very importantly , please carry a US Visa spec photogragh with a white background , atleast about 60% of the people were asked to get one, thankfully the consulate arranged for a mini studio inside the consulate and we got the photos in less than 20 mins ( at 100 Rs. cost)

2) Education counts - If you are not a B.E or do not have a education with a major in computers or technology , the chances are slim.

3) You only get a few seconds to impress the VO, so talk about the specfics of your project and the technology involved. If you start with "Charles Babbage invented ...." , the conversation does not get anywhere.

4) Organization - I may be wrong, but I observed that if you are from a Indian IT organization , or atleast the ones who have been taking full advantage of L1 visas during the past years....it's payback time folks !!

5) Salary : I dont know what the limits are , but there are optimal salary requirements. If a) you are one getting paid less in India - chances are slim. b) If your pay is on the higher side - there are all the more chances that you are a management guy and hence you lose points here too.

6) Multiple visits to other countries do not guarantee anything , do not count on the brownie points just because you are a frequent traveller.

Wondering where I lost mine .. point # 4, 5b,6.

All the best guys...

For the ones who would be joing my league...I was completely shattered when I was rejected a visa, but then when I was driving back home smoking a king size, I asked myself.... Is this a life stopper ... the answer is a definete NO.. we all came a long way in life and this is just one opportunity lost.

Ultimately i told my destiny which was derisively laughing at me.. ..WANT TO TEST MY FAITH.. COME CLOSER THEN AND LET MY FAITH LAUGH IN YOUR FACE.. threw the cigarette stub and drove away.

Mumbai -L1A Individual - Approved, 13th Dec
I had my interview today at the Mumbai consulate & would like to share my experience & a few tips based on my observations.

Background about my case:

a. been in US since Jan 2009 on an approved L1-B (stamped in Dec 2008)
b.L1-B was expiring in Sep 2011...we filed for a conversion to L1-A (individual) which got approved

Below are the q's &my responses:

Me: Greeted the VO
VO: Can you pls pass me your passport and the petition copy?

VO : Who do you work for ?
Me: YYYY mam

VO: What do you do there?
Me: Told her my designation. Also added 2-3 sentences on my current client and emphasized that I am carrying out Managerial work there

VO : What is your project about?
Me: Explained...after 3-4 sentences she indicated me to stop :)

VO: So are you applying for specialized skill or Managerial category?
Me: Managerial

VO: How many people report to you?
Me: My direct reports are 8 in number

VO: Are they onsite or India?
Me: They are all onsite. Their reports are mainly in India

VO: Who do you report to ?
Me: Mr XYZ who is the Account Manager for YYY (my client)

VO: Where do you live sir?
Me: city, state

VO: Do you hire and fire ?
Me: Yes mam. We have a process for hiring and firing and I need to follow that which I do

VO: Your visa is approved sir and you will receive your passport by courier

Might seem like a lot of q's but barely 2-3 mins

I was asked only for my passport & petition copy,no other doc !! All the while the VO kept entering something in her system- think she was just entering key points like my desig, visa category, US location...nt sure if her system helps her cross-check this !

Certain tips:

a. Keep your answers to the point - be detailed without launching into monologues
b. Communication is very imp - I saw a H4 getting rejected solely because the VO kept on asking the details abt the ceremony (mam, was there a fire , a priest) and the lady did not know what to say
c. The VO is not there to reject visas - they are only there to prevent VO fraud so pls dont give them an impression that you are a fraud...and this comes back to taking care of point a and b
d. Most importantly - be confident.

All the best people .

L1 B interview process in Chennai
While most of us share our experiences of the actual interview questions and answers, no one seems to be sharing experiences of the procedures involved around the pre-screening process. What do they ask for at the pre-screening counter?
