L1B Visa appoved on 9th July 2012
Lemme thank everyone who has shared their experience. I went through 2011 and 2012 all interview Q&A and tips.

Please find below my experience at Chennai Visa Consulate Officer:
Notes: There are 2 buildings inside the campus
Please note your visa interview will be in front of everyone.

1) Outside the building during entry you will receive one token.
2) After that security check will be done.
3) Based on your token number you will called and here at counter they will check your documents/DD etc. to make sure that you came along with necessary documents.
4) After that you will be asked to move on counter 14 for taking finger prints against your application
5) Then you will be asked to go to the next building which is on the same campus (8-10 steps walk)
6) Here again you need to go to counter 14 to submit DD
7) Then bases on the token you will be asked to join a queue for visa interview
8) I have seen in front of me interview asked only company name for H1B/H2 and told you will receive your password in a week. I was being asked below questions as L1B (specialized) visas were being applied.
(i) So you are applying for specialized visa?
(ii) For which company you are working?
(iii) What’s your experience with this company and total experience?
(iv) What’s your salary?
(v) What’s your specialization?
(vi) Why you think that’s the specialized?
(vii) Who were your previous clients?
(viii) What you did for that client and what was the domain?
(ix) From where you are coming?
(x) Where you are going?
Then she said “You will get your password within a week”.

ALL THE BEST....!!!

L1A - Blanket Visa Approved
Hi,

I had my Visa Interview for L1A - Blanket Visa at th US consulate in Chennai.

It is better to go there some 15-20 minutes before the appointment time as more often than not you will be waiting in the road and in this heat it will be difficult as you will start sweating a lot.

I went about 10-15 minutes before the interview time.

The process till the interview is clear and is very self understandable.

The following were the questions asked in the Interview

1. Which Company you work for. (Answered).
2. So are you applying for your managerial visa. (Answered)
3. How many people report into you at Offshore. (Answered)
4. How many people will be reporting into you at Onsite (Answered)
5. How many projects will you be managing at Onsite. (Answered)
6. WHat is your Indian Offshore Salary per Annum. (Answered)
7. What kind of Budgetary Authority you have (Answered)

After this he was working on the system and then took some of the rubber stamps he had and finally said that the Visa has been approved.

He gave back 2 copies of the I129 petition paper and told me to give one back to my HR and the other to take along with me when i travel.

Regards,
Sriram.S

L1-A blanket and L2 got approved
Observation – It is not required to be present in front of the consulate more than 45 mins of your schedule time. If you go early you will get tired and of course get little tensed by looking at the people around you. Just 30-40 mins before the scheduled time go to the gate and show your appointment letter and proceed. You can bring the water for your kids. Do not get assistance anybody other than the Consulate security/officials. My entire process has taken 40-45 mins and I was out of consulate after interview. Dress in formals esp for L1A's. I wore formals with Tie.

Conversation went like below

1. Good morning officer.
2. Good morning.
3. Your type of visa L1-A or B? - Answered
4. From which company? - Answered
5. What is the job title? - Answered
6. Indian salary? - Answered
7. Do you have hire & fire authority? – Yes
8. When did you last hire? – Last week
9. When did you last fire? – never
10. What if you get a chance? – my company doesn't fire an employee unless there is an ethical reason
11. Do you have budgetary authority? - yes
12. What is your budgetary authority? – Well… Actually my delivery manager has budgetary authority and I will project the budgetary requirements to him quarterly.
13. Well…. Call your family
14. (To my wife) Who is this person? – my husband
15. Are you sure? – Yes
16. Where did you first meet him? - Answered
17. Where did your parents meet him first – over the internet
18. Shaadi.com or bharatmatrimony.com? - bharatmatrimony.com
19. What is your kid’s name? – Answered
20. OK it is approved. Wait for a moment the system is little slow.
21. Everything all right… -He kept the PPs with him and handed over the documents with Consul name ad seal- Do you know what to do with this document? – No
22. Handover one to the company HR. 2nd copy you have to carry along with you while traveling. Keep it in the cabin baggage and not in the check-in luggage.
23. We said Thanks to him and left the counter and consulate.

Over all a good experience... Thank GOD

L1B and L2 approved at Chennai on July 9
Our interview was scheduled at 9.45, and we reached the Chennai Consulate at 8.45
Had to wait outside for around 30 minutes to get inside till they call batch by batch.

Process:

At entrance we showed the appointment letter and passport and gave a token number. The remaining process is with this token number.
First step is some initial verification for the HDFC slip etc. The next is finger print verifiation
After this we will be redirected to the next buiding.
There first we will need to pay the border security fee DD (if applicable)
The next is waiting for our turn at the counter.

Interview:

We waited till our turn and when our turn came, we had to wait for some time since the VO went outside for something. I was a bit nervous.
Then after some time she came back and was looking at some thing in the system. She seemed to be disturbed.
After some time she called us.

We went with a smile and wished her good morning.
We had to wish a couple of times, since the microphes were switched off.
So we raised the voice a bit and greeted again, and then she came to know the mic was switched off and turned it on.

Then the question and answers round.

1) Which company?
2) Which client?
3) How long for this company?
4) Total experience
5) Experience in the current domain.
6) About the project
7) How long will you stay?
7) Location
7) Salary
8) Specialisation
9) Tools used for this project.
10) Again asked about specialisation.I told "We" implemneted xxx in the project and she asked what did you do specifically?
11) She told she did not understand that specialisation I told and asked to explain some more details.

She wrote something on some papers and told " I can approve your Visa today. Please take this paper work and give one to your company"

I thanked her.

No questions to my wife.

She gave back the petition papers and took our passport
We thanked her again with a smile.
She also smiled and wished good luck.

Thanks a lot for all the forum post which really helped us to prepare well and I did several mock ups based on the questons posted.

L1B Blanket - Approved
Hi,

Thanks to the forum, I got a fair idea of what kind of questions they ask and what kind of answers they are expecting.

Practice Practice Practice. Till you start dreaming about the interview and your answers come to you in your dream too!!

Questions for me - was a quickfire session:
1) Which Client
2) What is your project on
3) What is the objective of the project
4) What is your role
5) What is your designation
6) What is your salary (india)
7) What is your specialization
8) How many people have this specialization in your company
9) So why is it that only you can be sent
10) Tell me more about this tool
11) Who has developed it
12) How long are you required at onsite

Thank you, Your visa is approved.

Note:
1) None of my answers were more than 2-3 sentences
2) Dressing is not important. I saw guys in Tees and Jeans getting their visa approved and a guy in a suit getting rejected.
3) Sound convincing and talk about skills that is not easily available. Case in point - the guy in front of me got rejected. All he was saying is "integration, testing, enhancement, development" in different sentences.
4) Don't freak out. This is NOT based on luck. If you are really a "special knowledge worker", you will get it. No rocket science in it. :)

Cheers & ATB
