Interview Questions
Hi,
I attended my VISA interview in chennai on Sep 2nd.
Here are the four questions that was asked to me.
1. How long have you worked for xxx?
2. Who is your client?
3. Why do you want to go to US?
4. What is the use of the application you are working on, to your client?
It was nice and clouded day morning in Chennai on Monday. VO was a nice lady who did not ask much questions?
she asked below questions:
1. how many years of exp?
2. Who is client?
3. What do they do?
4. What do you do for them?
5. do u have bachelors or masters degree?
5. what is current CTC in current org?
I answered these easy questions and VO told the golden words.
If we have more years of exp, then there will be less rejection.
Guys,
I really want to know what are the dos and donts in an L1B interview. I hear a lot of incidents where the visa gets rejected with no reason saying 'you have applied in the wrong category'. This has been a long wait for me and i cant really afford a rejection. And this is very important at this point of time for me and my family.
1) why would they call it as a wrong category
2) Is it sheer luck or can we do something about it before our PA.
3) what not to say and wat to say in the interview?
Thanks Jesus - I experienced your super natural power
A big thanks to all who shared their experiences in this site. I had gone through them before attending the interview, but I got a little different experience there!
I went for my L1 visa and my wife and kid's L2. That day morning I heard the wording in my inner mind "For the LORD your God will bless you as he has promised" (Deut. 15:6)
Still, I was a little nervious about the interview and when I reached there I was watching the people standing in front of me.
I noticed that an old lady putting her right middle finger, right index finger, and right thumb in that order and discussing with VO
I made a pre-assumption that this is the way.
When our turn came, I greeted the interviewer and he greeted back. Then he told to take impression of my left thumb. Also my kid was irritated and
sleepy that time. I, concentrating on the kid, straightaway pressed my right middle finger on the scanner! The official just stared at me and then
told "Now there are two things here - first, I asked for LEFT hand and for your THUMB. You have placed your RIGHT hand and MIDDLE FINGER. Now
do you need a translator" That was such an embarrassing question to a professional! I somehow managed to say "No sir, I will manage". Again, out of my tension I placed my LEFT MIDDLE FINGER first. Then suddenly changed to LEFT THUMB. I was really testing his patience. He got a wrong impression the first time itself.
Then he asked seriously:
Which company are you working for
Which client in US
What business do they do
Why are you chosen for the travel and not anyone else
What is your project all about
What is the application about
How big is the team
How many people are being sent to US
I replied to all his questions and he listened very carefully. My kid, still irritated, was making a fuss and the official told him "Hold on, kidu, we're
almost done!". Then he handed over the papers "Here is yours", then my dependants' "Here is yours". He didn't ask anything to my wife, just told her to take her left thumb impression. At last came out the words we were waiting for "It will be ready in a week!"
We were overwhelmed on hearing it, since he got really irritated in the beginning. We understood this happened purely by God's grace and I got
reminded of the Bible verse I read that morning.
Matthew 19:26 and looking at them Jesus said to them, "With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
Now your turn please trust in Jesus and say I can do all things through God who strengthens me. I am sure end of day you will praise HIM
Thanks everyone for sharing the VISA experience..
That made my interview a lot easier..
Delhites please dont even think about wearing a coat in this climate. There was hardly anyone wearing full formal dress. I saw people even wearing jeans, sunglasses while giving interview. It heavy hot inside. AC's are hardly working..Its crowded like a fish market...
Inteveiw Questions:
Company Name
Client Name
Project
My Specialty
Married-Kids
Where is your company located
Last question how many months you intend to stay.
Took VO around 1 min to verify whatever i said and after that i was told Visa approved.
All the very best to everyone going to interview...
Thanks a lot for sharing all your experiences through this site. It really really really helped. Following were the questions asked to me :
Who is your client?
What will you do in US?
How long are you working for this client?
Why you and not anyone else?
What is the tool that you have been working?
How is this tool beneficial for your client?
Why are you working on client tool, and why not your company's tool?
How long have you been with your company?
How long will you be in US?
Ground rules : Maintain eye contact, be confident and do not use technical terms while specifying about the project details. Explain in simple words and convince him/her that you have enough experience and technical skills about the project and this is the reason your company is sending you and not anyone else.
GO THROUGH THIS SITE AND READ AS MANY EXPERIENCES AS POSSIBLE. Make a list of questions(it will not be more than 25) and prepare well in advance.
GOOD LUCK!!
A BIG Thank You to all the "Immihelp Contributors" !!! This site rocks and all those who have already used this please recommend it to all the other people who may need it.
It helped me greatly and i have got my Visa approved at Mumbai consulate on 31st August!!! Thanks again!!!
I find it my moral duty to post my experience to all the other users which can help them enhance their chances of getting the Visa.Read below.
I had prepared a list of 33 questions from this site and their answers. I started with one line answers for basic questions like "Who is your client?" and 2-3 lines answers for questions like "What will you do in US?". But after brain storming with other people who have been through and cleared it, i cut short the answers as the Visa Officer (VO) has a long list of people to interview and will not be interested to hear unnecessary elaborate answers from you. For example when asked "who is your client?"- you can say the name "XYZ". In case the VO wants to know what that client does,he will ask you about it in his next question explicitly. You need not divulge detail answers yourself withou being asked, for 2 reasons- 1. you will annoy the VO as you kill his precious time 2. you risk revealing many loose threads which any clever VO can exploit. I will suggest you all to prepare short and crisp answers. Make a list of questions, write down the anwers, review them and get others feedback who have been through the interview on it, try to remove any redundant words or ideas in the answer, try to refine it. i will say there is no harm in refining the answers even every time you review them! Do mock interviews with help of your friend/family/colleague simulating actual scenario (right from entering the cabin and greeting "Good Morning") with 3-4 questions at a time. Ask them to not just judge the answers but also the eye contact and body language and make the necessary changes in you. Dont rote the answers but try to understand the puspose of question and decide what should your answer be. for example-
Q: Who do you work for?
A: should be your employer name and not the client name.
Reason being(for L1B) you are going on an "intra-company transfer", you will not be replacing any American out of his job and you will report to your company's supervisor at all time and your client cannot fire you, in case of any issues he will report to your supervisor.
Try to understand your Visa type-buisness or specialized - each and every number and alphabet in it-for eg. L1-intracompany transfer, B- Specialized worker, blanket- under the company etc.
Follow the normal practice to reach your consulate in time- say 30 mins earlier at least, remain calm and composed, be polite and dont panic, greet the Visa officer appropriately -good morning/afternoon/evening (don't go overboard and ask how are you as this may not be answered back by him due to time constraints, remember the queue of people he has to attend to and that you are not the only applicant.)
Make sure you know the location of your consulate well in advance, be familiar with means of transport, anticipate the travelling time w.r.t. traffic situation at your interview time, the weather (specially as its monsoon now) and other such things. It is a good idea, if possible, to visit the consulate before hand, preferably around the same time as your interview.Be calm, confident, don't stress your self with any unpleasant incidents or people (in my case i had a very bad feedback for the mock interview given by me to the visa faciltator in my office and to make matters worse, this person was actually putting me down (in every possible way) rather than encouraging me- it had freaked me out-totally!!! but without getting discouraged, i went ahead with my own preparation with the +ve attitude all is well and all will be well :)So my advice is to stay away from such people (some people may have attitude problems or they may want to take out their frustrations on you, thats all we can say)!!!
I am not posting any questions here as they are more or less the same as posted at this site earlier. Think like a VO who wants to issue a Visa only to the most needy person and then come up with your own strategy to tackle all the possible questions which can be fired at you.
Remember, this is an important opportunity which comes to very few people, you being the lucky fellow to have it, make the most of it.
Wish you all the readers all the very best and tons of luck!!! take care.
First of all a big thanks to all the people who share their experience via this site. It has been very valuable. For all aspiring applicants, Please follow this site as closely as possible, Make a list of most frequently asked questions, Prepare well in advance. If possible get your friends/relatives' support and conduct a mock interview to find out the problems you are having. And also consult anyone who has cleared the interview in the recent past to get a fuller idea.
Coming to my experience...
1. My reporting time was 8:45 am, 31st August, 2010. I reached the consulate at around 8:20 am. (Advisable to look up the consulate address in advance and get an idea of how much time it will take to reach there from your place of stay).
2. I showed my letter of appointment to the security guard at the front of the consulate. (For Chennai ppl, the gate at Mount Round near the Gemini Flyover is for visa applicants, not the one near Cathedral Road). I was redirected to the queue. I had around 10-15 people in front of me. It was already 8:30 am by then.
3. The queue moved pretty quickly. In front of the consulate itself there is a glass counter wherein you need to show your passport and appointment letter. Once the person at the counter checked it, I was asked to go to the security guard for physical check. There are separate queues for men and women.
4. Once the check is over, I was asked to get inside, wherein there were two more security guards who did one more physical check followed by bag check. (Please ensure that you do not take anything other than the documents required for your visa. No bottles unless you have a baby along with you, no handbags, no bags other than plastic bags. If you want to keep some money, take a wallet or small purse. Umbrella is allowed)
5. After the check I was asked to get in and asked to submit my documents in the counter. There were several counters. I was asked to go the counters at the left.
6. Once I reached the counter, I was asked to submit my documents. As part of L1B application, I was given a teal folder by my company with all the required documents and the DD. I submitted the documents. The person at the counter(Indian) checked all the documents and asked me to write my Name and Passport number behind the DD. Then my fingerprints were taken. Outside the counter there will be a biometric screen wherein you have to place the four fingers, first your left and then the right. Then the two thumbs together.
7. I was asked to take a photograph to be included in the documents. Unfortunately I didn't have a copy with me. They need a photo with dimensions mentioned according to the US Visa norms. I have specs, so was asked to remove it and take a photo. They have a studio within the consulate and they charge 100 Rs. for four photos.
8. After taking the photo, I went back directly to the same counter. The person at the counter rearranged my documents and asked me to keep my receipt and I-129S copy aside and returned the teal folder and asked me to go to the next building.
9. I went to the right, passed another set of counters and moved on to another building. (There are a lot of volunteers to help you and guide you. Never hesitate to ask for help and please be polite to everyone). The other building had the visa lobby.
10. In the visa lobby, I was asked to submit the DD I had with me in the counter no: 14. I submitted the DD and then waited in the lobby. (There is a water cooler in the lobby and also a TV. So you can relax).
11. I waited for about 5 minutes and was asked to move on to the counters at my right. A lot of people were sitting there. And there were about six counters with the Visa Officers. (One among them was a lady and another a bald officer.)
12. Lots of rejections were happening, so was not sure what to expect. A lady volunteer kept on asking the waiting crowd and directed them to the queue based on the reporting time. When she called for the 8:45 batch, I joined the queue in front of the counter 22.
13. After sometime, counter 24 opened and I along with 3 others were asked to go to that counter. We waited in front of the counter and then my turn came.
14. A person had appeared for student's visa and he was trying to reason with the Visa officer. It seems his visa was already rejected once and he had reapplied. Visa officer was not convinced and he became angry and rejected the person's visa.
15. I went to the counter and greeted the officer by saying "Good Morning sir". I introduced myself and asked him "How are you sir?". He wished me back and asked for my documents. I gave them and he started checking it.
16. I was asked the following questions..
a. Who is your client?
b. What kind of applications have you worked for?
c. What are the applications which you have designed for this project?
d. Give specific details of the applications that you designed.
(I had collected the most frequently asked questions from Immihelp and written down the answers in complete sentences. Please do not write down the points alone. I tried it and failed miserably when my friend did a mock interview. You need to frame full sentences and prepare. Coz, during the interview, you will be tense and you will forget half of what you had prepared. Make sure your answers cover all the points. And try not to answer in single sentences. Say if they ask you who your client is, tell more details about the client, the project, the total experience within the project, what the project does and your field of expertise. Try to make sure that the officer need not have to ask you a lot of questions)
I think I have covered all the points.. Make sure that you are confident in what you say. Convince the officer that you have done all the things you say. Look at the officer. Be pleasant. Be confident. Do not rush through your answer. Give enough thought to the question and answer it in simple sentences in clear voice. All the best for all those who are awaiting their visa interviews...
