OCI Card

No problems. Took 1 month exactly from mailing application to receiving my oci card.

My recommendation is to follow every step in detail and triple read/check everything. I didn't have 1 or 2 of the required docs they required to prove Indian citizenship, but I added other additional documentation of proof. There were no complaints.

I have to say, having to continue the application process from the ckgs website to the india gov website and then back to ckgs is extremely awkward. I would really like to see that more streamlined in the future.

Here is how it went for me. I have to re-submit twice, first because of incorrect photo (however the same photo was used to US Passport), second time was returned from Consulate because first name and last name were swapped in government form.

Applied OCI for my son on 21st August,2017. Received OCI Card on 2nd Oct,2017. Process went smooth(except that i missed to send one document copy, so it extended the process by 3-4 days).

Also, i noticed most of the time goes in the courier services.
Like for me, i sent the original documents on Friday, CKGS received it on Monday(delaying 2 days because of UPS guidelines). Again the original card dispatch from India on 22nd Sep and document received at SFO on 29th Sep(> 7 days).
Again the card was dispatched from CKGS to my address on Friday and i received it on Monday(delaying 2 days).

HI All,

I applied for my son's new OCI card to Washington DC embassy. I submitted all documents through mail on August 1st and we received his passport back on August 10 2017. But after that date, the process has not moved any further.Can anyone tell me how many days will it take to receive new OCI card from DC.
We are planning for India trip but as we are not seeing any progress, we are not able to book the tickets.

I have applied my daughter's OCI card to Chicago embassy on 24/July. The application reached to Indian embassy on 27/July. Since then, Government website is showing 'Under-Process'.

Its been 7 weeks and no update. Has anybody recently applied new OCI to Chicago location? Can someone please share experience?

There was one minor problem.

In my cancelled old Indian passport, my name is in <first name> <father's name> <last name> format. In the US passport, the name is in <first name> <last name> format.

The application was put on hold. They asked me to send either the name change order or an affidavit confirming that both the names belong to one and the same person. I typed up a simple affidavit stating that both the names belong to me and got it notarized and sent it to CKGS.

After that everything was smooth.

I would like to share my experience and complaint of the OCI process and in particular India's discrimination towards existing foreign PIO card holders. Please let me know if you are in a similar situation.

I'm British and have been married to my Indian (citizen, not PIO) wife for 25 years. I and our four children have been valid PIO card holders since 2007. After hearing about the merger of the PIO with OCI I completed the online forms as per instructions on the websites of OC and VFS Global - an outsourced visa processing company here in Spain.

On presentation of my papers at the VFS offices I was informed of a law that requires any married couple of more than two years to swear an oath in front of the Spanish Consul. Nowhere on any website have I seen this stated. So, I could not even apply for my OCI in Lieu of PIO because my wife was not with me and we live 4 hours from Madrid. I find this a systematic application of a law in contradiction to Indian Jurisprudence of 'innocent until proven guilty'. We have given the Indian government no reason to suspect this a marriage of convenience and believe it should be for them to request proof of continued marriage on a case-by-case basis.

VFS then refused to accept the applications for my children. I argued the case that their right to PIO is derived by their mother's citizenship and has absolutely nothing to do with my marriage to her because they would still be entitled if we were divorced or I were dead. My wife then called the Consulate and spoke to the Consul who agreed there was no requirement for the children and also that there was no mention of the oath on the websites.

In addition, whilst at the VFS office an Indian citizen was attempting to change his Spanish wife's PIO to OCI. He was told that the application was on the wrong form, that it had to state 'Foreign Spouse' on the margin and not 'PIO in lieu of OCI'. He argued, quite rightly, that nowhere in the application process for 'in lieu' does it ask the status of the applicant in relation to the partner. In fact, that is on the 'New OCI' process, which produces the 'Foreign Spouse' form. However, the new OCI process does not take into consideration the existing validity of the PIO card in that the married couple must go through the entire process of presenting marriage papers translated and attested.

So, the upshot is, if you are a foreign spouse your current PIO card status counts for nothing, which is clearly discriminatory. My status has not changed since producing all necessary papers for the PIO card and it is an insult to our long relationship to have to prove to the Indian government that we are still married.

And STILL the OCI and VFS websites state nothing about this requirement or the oath or the different application for foreigners, that after I have sent a document indicating the errors. Indeed, as of writing the VFS Global website still offers this information:

"External Affairs Minister has announced that the conversion of PIO cards into OCI cards will be done free-of-charge (gratis) for applications submitted until 30 June 2017"

It has of course been extended until 31st December, 2017. Also, the fact that it is 'gratis' until then would suggest the PIO card is still valid after that period.
