L1-B approved, not as bad as made out to be
I got my L1-B approved extremely easily. I witnessed several rejections as well, but in most cases I could tell they were going to be rejected even before the VO rejected them, just because of the way they were answering questions.

What I think really helps:
- Being from a product company, or better still a US based product company

What I think biases the VO in a positive way:
- Neatly dressed (not necessarily formals)
- Neutral accents
- Good grammar

What I think is overrated:
- Confidence
- What work you actually do and whether you are an expert at that (you can easily present it the way you want)

Common mistakes that people made:
- Talking about 2 different things when asked about (a) expertise and (b) what they were going to do in the US
- Using terminology that was extremely hard to understand
- Talking about project/product when asked about skills
- Talking about specialization in third-party owned products or open technologies

My suggestion:
- In preparation, explain your product/project and special skills to someone who is non-technical and unrelated to your work and is honest with opinions and seek feedback on whether it was believable. I think that's all thats needed.

P.S: Its OK to be nervous - everyone was ! The VOs were trying really hard to make people comfortable, so I'm sure they understand the nervousness. Don't try weird things to hide it !

L1B Blanket Approved @ Chennai on 31st
Within an hour of my stay I saw three L1 rejections and two approvals;

But one thing I noticed that Visa officers are listening to what the applicant is saying. In one case, I saw VO returned the passport almost within 1 minute. But in general, they want to listen and judge. So if your skill is special, you will get a chance to talk about that.

Let me tell about my case:

I have 10 years of exp in my current company, it is US based product company. I work in the R&D group of the product, I have special knowledge about the domain of the product. I am the owner of certain technologies used in the product, nobody in my company is aware of that technology. I have worked in US for 4 years in H1.

VO listened very carefully what I said, tried to understand and gauge the specialization, asked some relevant questions also. The questions are of the same nature. I used very simple language and explained what I do in my current role, what I will do in US, why this skill is considered so special, how long I am dealing with that skill (I also mentioned I have published a paper on the area). He listened to everything, asked one/two clarification and then said "it is approved".

If your document is poor or some of the requirements are missing (for example working in the organization for less time, do not have really a special type of skill) you will be rejected straight (even if you talk so many things), otherwise you will be given a chance to talk about your skill. You need to convince the VO during that time.

While talking, good confidence, clarity of answers are essential to convince.

L1B approved on 31st
Hi All,

My l1b got approved and 2 of my other friend's visa got approved.

Most of the questions are same as specified by others.

My views:

1. If your petition is good you have 90% chance of getting your visa rest 10% the way you explain about your specialization ( Don't have a shaky tone. Done show that you are desperate.)
2. If you are working in a product company you have better chance when compared to a service company.
3. I wont say l1B is based on luck. If you have a strong petition and you can clearly explain them that you are really specialist you get visa.
4. Don't use technical terms as they wont understand. If you say that they can't understand that technical terms don't get tensed. Explain in layman language.

All the best guys.

L1B - Blanket Approved @ Chennai on 31st Jan'12
Thanks people for posting your experiences here on this site. It was really helpful.

My L1B - Blanket got approved today. There were two other colleagues of mine and even their L1B - Blanket got approved.

I strongly believe that VISA officers are there to listen to you. Three of us discussed post interview and our opinion for visa officers was same. We were there on 3 different counters i.e.: 3 different visa officers.

I even discussed with two other persons. One who was standing in front of me and another colleague of that person. Though both got rejected but they said that both the visa officers listened to us patiently. One got rejected because his voice was shaking and didn't had much experience and another said that I was trying to explain my specialization skills but it was too common and available within US.

My Questions:
1) Which visa category you have applied for?
2) Which company you are working for?
3) From how long?
4) What is your specialization?
5) From how long you are in your current role?
6) Indian Salary?
7) Highest Qualification?

My other two colleagues were asked more or same same kinda questions. 2-3 additions or deletions from the above. I have never traveled to US before however other two have traveled in past.

I always go for KISS approach and followed the same here... Now, don't trouble your brain... KISS stands for Keep It Short and Simple :)))

Key Take Away
1) Be Confident. Don't loose confidence; No voice shake and maintain eye contact.
2) A good experience (5years plus) is helpful. My colleague had 4.5yrs exp and got approved.
3) Tell your specialized skills/knowledge in very simple words and how it's important for client/project.
4) Just prove that you are an ideal choice for the client/company/role.
5) Don't go with the mindset that its going to get rejected or rather it might get rejected.

There are thousands of visas issued every year for US but you don't need all of them. All you need is just ONE and go for that. I went with the same thought :))).

Good Luck...

L1B Blanket got approved in chennai on 23rd of dec 2011
Interview lasted for 9-10 minutes.

Question Asked:
1. What kind of visa you are applying for?
2. Company name
3. Specialization
4. Tenure in company
4. Tenure in project
5. Indian salary
6. Why you?
7. What you will do in US (actually asked with specialization and I explained him in very detail)

points I observed
1. Good Indian salary is very important
2. Specialization should be very unique (do no dare to say any technology word like .NET, Java, C, sitecore, sharepoint)
3. Tenure in project
4. Be very confident about everything you say and do not show that you are dying to get the visa
