In-laws got visit visa stamped - 10 years Multiple Entry
My in-laws had their interview at the chennai consulate on the 25th. They got their visit visa approved.

Both are below 60 and retired. Here is a summary of questions and answers.

1.Why do you want to go to US?
Ans: Visit daughter and son-in-law. Attend daughter's graduation in May (My wife is pursuing her MS degree part time and planning to graduate in spring).

2.Who is supporting her studies?
Ans: She is working for XYZ and they are sponsoring her studies.

3.The visa officer repeats the same question.
Ans: Daughter's company pays for her studies and all expenses are taken care of by the company.

4. Is she married? Does she have kids?
Ans: She is married. No kids.

5. What type of visa does she have?
Ans: H1B.

The visa officer asked for supporting documents. Went through all the documents thoroughly.

6. Are you working? (to my mother-in-law)
Ans: She says no. Said she is a house wife.

7. How long do you intend to stay in the US?
Ans: 4 months. (A few people infront of them said 6 months which made the visa officer mad. Eventhough they had 6 months written on DS 156, they said 4 months)

The visa officer then circles the entry on DS 156.

8. The visa officer assumed they were planning to travel immediatly and raised concern that they won't be able to stay in the US till May. My father-in-law told her that they are planning to travel only after December.

The she wished them both a good trip and asked them to pay the visa issuance fee.

I hope this is of some help to anyone of you looking for some prep material for interviews. The experiences here helped us prepare well for the interview.

Make sure you have all the required documents and any additional ones that can prove your case. Good luck !

Hi, My mother had applied for visa on 7/27/05, in Chennai. Her request was denied under 214B. I am her only child. I had sent all the necessary documents. My mother is retired. She is working for a private firm, for about a year. This is her second visit. The first time she was given six months, she left in 4 months. I do not understand why. She even explained she has medical problems, and showed them the return ticket, which was in Oct 05. I am very sad. Wonder what I could have done differently. Can somebody help. Sujatha

Parents got visa
Thanks to this site, my parents prepared well for the interview. The interview was in Chennai on Jul 25 in English. All the questions were asked to my father and none to my mother.

Questions asked:
What is the purpose of your visit?
What is the annual income? (My father was shown as the sponsor)
What is your son-in-law doing in the US?
Is this the first time he has gone to the US?
When did he go to the US?
When did your daughter get married?
How many children do you have?
How old is your other daughter? Is she staying with you in Chennai?
Who is sponsoring your visit?
When will you daughter/son-in-law come back?

For the last question, my parents had a problem understanding the accent. Immediately the officer summoned an interpreter and the question was interpreted in Tamil. Although I made them carry all the documents listed on this site, no documents were verified. They got a 10 yr ME visa.

My suggestion is to carry sufficient proof of holdings in India. Mainly in terms of assets and financial holdings(regardless of self-sponsored or sponsored by someone else) and also make sure the officer knows that.

Reg. the affidavit, it is available in this site under visitor visa documents.

Hope this has helped. Good luck!

Visitor Visa
My Parents recived 10 years visitor's visa at Chennei last week on their first attempt.

Documents were prepared based on the list provided on this web site.

Officer asked many questions about detalis of sponser (myself). Where does your son live, work, nature of job, income, what countries he visited, how many children & ages etc. My parents were well prepared to answer such questions.

Also questions were asked about When are you going to US, When are you coming back and what are you going to do in US. My parents had one page plan of there 4 month trip that included few places in US, birthday party and shoping.

While each individul's experience is diffrent, what seems to help my parents most is
1. Complete documentation as mentioned in this web site
2. Good writen plan of the trip
3. Parents taking time to learn the sponser complete details and remember them to answer during interview without any hesitation.

Thnaks to other people who posted their experiences from which I was able to benift and good luck to all applicants and sponsers.

Can we show the balance we have in any bank in India in I 134 form. If my husband is a sponsor then can we show our joint income on I 134 or should it be his income only? Please reply. I am very tensed
