Me and my wife had their L1 & L2 Visa interview yesterday. The forum was of immense help in preparing for the interview.

The OFC biometric process was same as what has already been mentioned on the forum so i wont go into its details.
Our Visa interview was scheduled at 12 PM. We reached the consulate on time, collected the token. After document (DS 160, I 129S, etc) verification and fingerprints we were sent to another building for interview.

We submitted our DD at one counter and then after a little wait were called for the interview. Below is interview excerpt:
VO: How did you get your name?
Me: Told the story behind it

VO: How long have you been working for you company
Me: 2 yrs

VO: Tell me about your application.
Me: Gave a brief 2 liner overview about it

VO: So whats your specialization?
Me: Told about the specifics

VO: Why only you are being sent for this project?
Me: details

VO: Indian and US salary
Me: Told abt it

VO to my wife: How long have you been married, and then how did you two meet.

After that she verified certain things on her PC and finally uttered the golden words : VISA is approved :)

Basically I am working on a proprietary product of our company and work as a subject matter expert in its implementation.

It was tensed as well as an amazing experience for me and my wife on 15th of Oct. I would like to thank this site a lot as I got plenty of information. I prepared almost like for an exam :) which paid off finally.

Interview questions:
Me: Good morning Ma'am
VO: Good morning
VO: How long have you worked in the current company?
Me: Told
VO: What is your salary in India?
Me: Told
VO: What is your salary in US?
Me: Told
VO: Who is your client in US?
Me: Told
VO: Are you working out of your parent company or at Client location?
Me: I will be working in the Client location
VO: What are you going to work there?
Me: I started explaining...
VO: Interrupted me, and asked specifically about a term that I used.
Me: I explained it in lay-man's terms or simple words so that she could understand
VO: Ok, I got it

VO to my wife: How long have you been married
My wife: Told
VO to my wife: Was it a love marriage or an arranged one (with a smile)
My wife: Arranged
VO to my wife: Did you know each other before? Are you relatives?
My wife: No

Golden words from the VO
VO: I am approving your Visa...
Me: Thanks a lot Ma'am, Have a nice day
VO: You are welcome, You too

Suggestion:
I saw two rejections (from different VOs) just before my approval. The questions from the interviewers seem to be quite reasonable. I felt the candidates were unable to give reasonable answers though they were speaking confidently. But I might be wrong.

Things to remember:
- Answer to the point when necessary. Example, answer to the point for client name, experience, salary,etc...

- Answer specifically and briefly for questions related to the work or specialized knowledge.
  Avoid using words/phrases like:
   - I am very specialized in so and so skill
   - I am the only member who could do this job
   - words like huge, special, only, etc, various, many

- When interrupted and asked about specific details, then try to explain it in simple terms only. Do not try to impress rather try to make them understand what it is.

- If VO asks a question to your wife, let her answer. You should never ever utter a single word or should never correct her.

Bottom line:
- Try to be very specific in your answer. Your answer as a whole, should give an impression that you have specialized knowledge. You should not be trying to prove by using generalized statements or words, which will lead to misconception or which might give an impression that you are trying to bluff.

- Preparation is the key. You should be able to state your specialized knowledge within 1 or 2 minutes which gives whole lot of information.
Example: Telling a film story in matter of 5 minutes! It is tough but can be lot of fun :)

- Above all is luck!

Good Luck!

L1B approved but still waiting for passport
My L1B was approved on 11-OCT-2012 in Chennai. But still waiting for passport. VO asked all the general question given in this forum and was satisfied with the answers so he approved the Visa. But I am still waiting for my passport and not able to track it via email as well as customer care. email response status is "Origination Scan". My company has given Delhi address for passport pickup. could someone let me know a better and reliable way for passprt tracking.

Hi,

My Visa interview was on 16th Oct at 10.00 AM. I reached there with confidence, as I was very much optimistic to get the Visa approved, having more than 5 yrs expereince and good package including US based well known client.
When I have done with initial formalities and been told to submit the demand draft at counter no. 14, I looked at some guy standing at counter no. XX and was speaking continiously almost for 15 min, i thought he must be having somne queries and would be discussing the same. Since I had different impression of interview that i does not last more than 5 min. after submitting the DD i found that interview was going on that counter and visa was rejected.
After waiting for around 15 min, My token number dispalyed the same counter when i reached there some another guy was in same mode for around 15 and ultimately his Visa was also rejected.
Finally it was my turn.

Me- Good Morning officer.
VO- GM.
VO- So where do u work.
VO- Which kind of company is this.
Me- I started telling him about my company but he interrupted me.
VO- How long have u been working there.
After this question he went some where and returned after 5 min.
VO- where are u going in US.
VO- what is your indian salary.
VO- what do u do in your company.
VO- What is your salary in US.
VO- what is your specialisation.
When I was replying some one came to meet him and he again left his seat.
and came after around 3-4 min.
And started reading the docs handed over by me took around 2 min to read them.
VO- what would u do in US.
VO- what is team size.

It was really irritating that he left his seat many time not only with me but same behaviour with the gus before me.
I responded all the answers confidentlly and and i never felt that he is not satisfied with my ans, does not responded any thing.
and at the end he stamped my papers and handed over to me with my passport with out saying anything. when i asked him, then he told ask your company to apply the Visa in rigth category. This is not the proper category. and that's all, I waited there for a while just to know if the guy behing me has got the approval or not just to verify if i did some thing wrong, and after a while another guy visa was also rejected.
It was really disappointing that the VOs are not even answerable for the rejection and even dont care to pay attention in interview after taking so much fees.

I have not seen anyone in this forum who has stayed in US for more than 2 months on B1 VISA and still got their L1B visa approved. Same is the case with me. I was sent to US for about 90 days in 2007 and I have my L1B - Blanket interview scheduled on 30th of this month. I believe this will be a sure shot question for me and I wonder if I will be able to convince the VO! Can anyone who has faced a situation share their experience here. Thanks. I shall post my experience on 30th of this month :)

hi
Hi Rajesh,

You have been to US on B1 before or it was L1. If you were on B1 visa and stayed for more than a month then its become quite dificuly to get your specilized visa stamped.

Secondly how long you have been working with the client..... that matters a lot as the domain exp is considerd as speciliaztion.
Thirdly - in your PRD what specilization you have writtten its its smpily and languages like .net or Java then it becomes tough to get into the speclization.

Rajeev.

Hi all,

After checking into previous posts, i also post my experience. My interview was scheduled on 16th 10:00AM, I reached around 9:30 and after checking the documents, they allowed to take interview.

VO asked question like..
1.which company u r wrkng?
2. what does it do?
3. who is ur client?
4.what they will do?
5.what ur specicalised skills?
6.can't u do same work from offshore?
7.how much they pay for u?
8.what so special about u?

I gave answers to all question with quite confidence and i never felt that he is going reject my visa.I was full confident when he was stamping on my papers.

But after stamping some thing, he said u r company not applied ur visa in proper category. So, i can't give visa.
I was supprised and left the counter with white slip in hand.

Following are my observation after gone thru all these steps.
1. ur company brand name also play major role in visa.If ur from US based company, the chances of getting visa is more(I observed from other ple got visa those who r in front of me).
2.Ur package and experience sholud synchronous with each.(I observed in service based package are less compared to product based com's).
3. Luck and mood of the VO also plays major role.

Please post ur experiance even ur visa denied.we can get some information even if ur vias denied.

Thanks,
RK
