Need advice for our B2 application
We will be having our third B2 interview this August.
We have traveled outside of our country several times early this year.
I was issued a B1 before and was cancelled without prejudice because it was only valid for 3 months.
Our concern is my Mom-In-Law is currently in the US with an overstayed visa.

What will be the chances for a B2 visa?
Please help.
Thanks!

4. What is your eldest son?
5. Which city is he working?
6. Which company he works for?
7. How long will stay in USA?
8. Where is your second son?
9. What is ur 2nd son doing?
10. Is your grand son living with you in India?
11. What is your husband?
12. When did he passed away?

Your Visa is approved, you can leave now.

Getting our B1/B2 for the Entire Family
We had a family appointment at the US Consulate in Mumbai on 28 July, 2015 at 1:30 pm. Dad, Mom, Grandmom who is 81 years old and myself appeared for the interview.

Post that from 1 month I had been super scared about getting the visa. I had prepared like a bunch of all documents for dad's business, grandmoms rental income, agreement statements etc and the interview went as follows : ( Taken Gujarati language interview - but dad answered in english)

Full family together in one window - (Fully wet in the rains)
VO: Good Afternoon , may i have your Passports ?
Dad: Sure
VO; Why do you want to visit USA
Dad : my sister is there and I want to visit here and do some sightseeing in CA
VO: What do you do here
Dad: I have my own business - explained
VO: You ( Pointing to me) , What do you do ?
Me: I head sales in an IT company
VO: Have you visited any country previously
Me: Yes, Bhutan
VO: surprised !! - Of all countries Bhutan ??
Me: Dad wanted to go there for a holiday
VO: Typing something on computer
VO: Your visa has been approved !! Thank You and Hope you have a great time in the US

Thats it - 10 yr visa - No paperwork shown.

Be confident and smile are the keys to getting the visa !!

How I got the my B1/B2 visa
My appointment was at 9 am on 27th July 2015 at BKC , I was not at all sure if i ll get the visa or not. I had heard that its not easy to get a US Visa but from my experience i can say for any its an easy one. The question asked are all related to the form that you have filled . I appeared for the interview and this is how it was:

Me- Good Morning
VO- No Reply
VO- Why do you want to go to the US
me- To take a vacation and Meet my Friend
VO- How do you know this friend?
Me- Replied Accordingly
VO- Is She a US Citizen?
Me- Replied Accordingly
VO- Where does she work?
Me- Replied accordingly
VO- For How she has been in US
Me - Replied
VO - What do you do?
Me - Replied
VO- Have you recently done ur university
Me- Replied
VO- What were you previously doing?
Me- Replied Accordingly
VO - What does your husband do ?
me- Replied
VO - How many employees in his office?
Me - Replied
VO - Congratulations! Your visa is approved. You ll get a sms on your mobile once the passport is ready for pick up
Me- How long does it take for the passport to be ready?
VO- less than 5 days and smiled.

So during this whole conversation , I was not asked to show any of my documents. Though I had all with me. So with my experience I can say that whatever questions you are asked during your interview is related to what you have filled in DS-160 form and so i suggest that you should carefully fill the form and know what you have mentioned and be confident during your interview. There is no way that your visa would be rejected. You should be genuine and honest with your answers .

B2 for widowed parent
Hi,

I wanted to add a data point for a B2 applied for my mother. I was quite apprehensive of my mothers chances - she is a recent widow and most of her children are based in the US (2 NIV and 1 citizen). One other child not in the US is also abroad. So, I was really concerned about a 214b rejection though my mother has absolutely no intent of staying there even for a couple of months let alone permanently.

I set her DS-160 to state that her son was covering expenses for the trip (truth) although my mother can adequately fund her own trip. I wasn't sure about writing self-funded trip and then writing Homemaker as occupation though surely there's no relation between the two as you can have lots of money and not have to work. I gave her property documents as well as bank statements (hers and mine) in case question of ties or financial capability came up. I did not give her any formal affidavit of support since their website clearly stated that an affidavit of support or a letter of invitation would not be considered in the evaluation process even if provided and instead had a summary document listing financial and immovable assets.

Points of interest: although I put myself as funding the trip AND traveling with her, I put down a different city other than my US address for where she was going and contact person was also in that city (I marked that person as being a "relative"). I put down 2 months as length of visit. I got my H1B renewed at the same mission 6 weeks earlier using drop box.

Here are the questions she was asked. Most of them were DS-160 questions. She was doing the interview in the local language with a female American consular officer.

1) Why do you want to go to the US?
2) Where is your husband?
3.1) Where will you go / where is your daughter in the US? (Child 1).
3.2) What does your son do (in the US, Child 2)?
3.3) You have another daughter (in the US, Child 3)?
3.4) Do you have another child? (Yes, Child 4).
4.1) Have you been to other countries? (Some major and minor countries).
4.2) (Took a look at old passports). What were you doing in country XYZ?
4.3) What did your husband do?
4.4) So what were you doing in country XYZ?
4.5) So what did your husband do?

So, in summary, her interview was an in-depth interrogation about all her family. She was asked specifically about every child and her husband. Since she had been to some offbeat non-touristy countries with my father (accompanying him to academic conferences), she was questioned about those places and my father's occupation.

Everything specified in DS-160 was the truth and all her replies were honest. We lay out her situation exactly as it was with the acceptance that if they didn't give her a visa, then so be it.

The lady then said that her visa was approved. It was ready for pickup the next afternoon in 24 hours. My mother was given a 10 year multiple entry visa.

I believe this is a total luck of draw. They hardly take any information, which would allow them to make a proper judgment of 214b intent except documenting immediate family member's location. They typically don't look at any documents that might establish some ties (which I knew in advance but prepared a packet nevertheless). They could have said the exact opposite thing well in our case - that you have intent to immigrate (which would have been wrong). I can admit that there are some nonverbal cues / body language they can see when interviewing people but plain and simple, they don't have sufficient information in DS-160 or look at documents or do comprehensive questioning to establish immigration intent.

I think in the end it depends on who you get and whether they got up happy or cranky in the morning. So, be completely honest about your case and let the decision take its course. Do practice interviews based on DS-160 information and use the questions found on this forum.

Please advise
I came into the united State with a B1/B2 visa and was supposed to spend just a month but now approaching the third month. My reasons are that I decided to stay over and take a 3 days leadership certificate program holding in early August before returning back home. And secondly since schools are on long holiday (summer break) I decided that my wife and kids come join me here for the summer holiday for just 2 weeks and we all will return back home together in August. Though they don't have visa but I planned for them to visit the embassy next week to apply for visa for this purpose.
My question is that will visa be granted to them since am still in the USA ( though m the date on my I94 is till Oct) or do I need to return home take them to apply for the visa and we can now plan our trip another holiday season. I just wanted them to come since my wife hasn't travelled before and to give her a treat to celebrate our 6 years wedding anniversary which was yesterday.

Kindly advise as I wouldn't want to pay for visa fees and the cost of travelling to the state where the embassy is located only for them to be denied on the grounds that am still in the U.S.
Again this is my second time of coming to the U.S. The first time I spent only 1 month and went back home.

Thank you.
