My daughter and son-in-law are both staying in the US on L1 Blanket Visa which means that they are working there for a short period of 2-3 years on behalf of their Software Firm in Kolkata. My wife & I applied for B2 visitor's visa. We filled in online DS-160 form and uploaded passport size digital photos for both. Got one 'Confirmation Page' at the end of it. We deposited visa fee @7094/- each (including service provider's fee @374/- each) at the counter of HDFC bank in Kolkata. Then we filled in form for Visa Interview in Kolkata. Got 'Interview Letter'.
Then with the following papers we entered the US Consular Office in Kolkata at 5/1 Ho Chi Minh Sarani, Kolkata-700071. The mandatory papers are: 1) The valid passport 2) one copy of passport size photograph 3) Confirmation Page of online DS-160 form with CEAC bar code 4) Original Interview Appointment Letter and 5) Visa Fee receipt of HDFC Bank (consular copy).
Though our interview was fixed at 11.15 am, we turned up at 09.50 am at the gate of the Consular office. As there was a lot of time to pass, we were thinking what to do, immediately the Sentry in charge of the gate told us to stand in queue on the shaded footpath, where there were already some 15-20 men & women waiting for their turn to enter. It took few minutes to have security check, short wait in the lawn before we were allowed to enter the main A.C. hall, where already some 50 people were waiting.
First we went to a counter to deposit the above-mentioned mandatory papers. Then we had to wait for more or less one hour for our turn to come. When that final moment came, we were called to attend counter no.6. We could not see the face of the interviewer from the seating area. When we reached there there was a pleasant surprise! We were to be interviewed in Bengali by a graceful American Lady, who at our first sight welcomed us with a loud 'Namaste'. After a few basic questions for 2-3 minutes, she declared, Apnader visa hoye gechhe which means that your visa has been cleared.
Needless to state that we were carrying more than a pound of papers from our sponsor daughter and other papers from our side including some photographs as advised by
www.immihelp.com. But nothing required!!!
The next day we visited the vfs office at OM Towers (14th floor), 32 Chowringhee Road (next to Park St. Metro station on the eastern side of Cowringhee Road). Here we required to show 1) HDFC bank receipt (applicant's copy) 2) A photo-id Card like Voter Card/PAN card/Driving Lic. If any one wants to take the Passport of his/her relative who does not want to visit VFS office, then, 3) An authorisation letter showing full name of the representative as mentioned on the photo-id, name of the applicant whose passport is being collected and HDFC Bank bar code no. of the applicant.
Here is a caution: Before entering the vfs office, please ensure by calling their helpline 91-120-6611411 that your passport has reached vfs office for delivery. The conduct of the staff in VFS office is dubious. Don't know why sometimes they announce that the passport has not reached our office, which means a lot of trouble. This happened to many of my friends before. Also happened to me. They delivered my passport and told that my wife's passport is not there. When I pressurised them saying that I have confirmed news that the passport has been released by the Consulate in time, they took some time and later appeared with that passport without an appology. So beware!!!!
