interview was in telugu? they got visa

My parents had visa at Chennai US consulate on Oct 20 at 9 am. They went to the spot by 8.15 am and they were called in by the secutiry around 8.45 am.

Only 1 question was asked by VO and No documents were asked from my parents.

Dad works in a private hospital as Director currently. He retired from Govt.Service a few years ago. My mom is a retired doctor, currently a homemaker. Mom and dad had their interview in English. VO asked why are you visiting US – For which my dad said “To visit my son in Atlanta”. VO said ‘Great Sir, your wife’s visa is approved. But we are giving you 221g for administrative processing”
Since my dad has a Ph.D in Biotechnology, he was asked to submit resume, documentation on his research topics, dates and fields of research interests. Also they have my dad’s passport with them now. A pink slip was handed over to my dad alone. After coming out, he sent all the required documentation via email. He is still waiting to hear back. VO said that it will take atleast 4 weeks to know the result. But my mom has already got the visa stamped on her passport.
Note – Heard from my dad, that there were many other Ph.D candidates for whom 221g was served.
But I am still wondering what is the link between a Ph.D and Tourist visa. Anyways, hoping for the best and good luck to others.

Cheers,
Kumar

Visa Granted without any issues
I have been following this forum for a few days now since my in-laws were going for a B2 visitor visa interview in Chennai. The interview was today, 20th October and first I would like to thank all participants of this forum for giving valuable inputs which helped me prepare my in-laws for the interview. Thanks to immihelp for the platform.
The interview went very smooth and they were granted visa. We were delighted when we got the call from them after the interview.
The interview was in Chennai and we had opted it to be in Malayalam. Here is how it went:
VO: Good Morning
A: Good morning
VO: Why are you going to US?
A: To meet my daughter and her family
VO: Is your daughter married?
A: Yes, she is married and they have a 5yr old son
VO: Where do they live in US?
A: California
VO: Where in California?
A: San Jose
VO: Oh! I'm from San Jose too. Its a nice place.
A: Good (And apparently this was a golden moment. it might have helped)
VO: How long are you going for?
A: 4 to 5 months
VO: So you will return after 4 to 5 months?
A: Yes. We have some property and farmland, etc. that will need to be attended to. The most we can stay away is 4 to 5 months.
VO: Do you have other kids?
A: Yes, we also have a son younger to our daughter. He works in Dubai.
VO: Is he married?
A: No
VO: Your visa is granted. you will get your passports in a week
A: Thank you Sir.

No documents were asked whatsoever.

Thanks

Not living in US, but B-2 Visa Denied to Fiance because of me
I am a U.S. citizen. I met my Fiance while I was working as a nanny in Australia. He is an Australian Citizen. He came over on a Visa Waver this year (2011) for 2 months to meet my extended family, friends and to my shagrin asked me to marry him.

He chose to apply for the B-2 Visa upon strenuous research on ths subject and reading this line from The Embassy of the United States, Canberra in regards to marriage in the U.S., "If you do not intend taking up indefinite residence in the United States but will continue to live and work abroad after the marriage ceremony, you should apply for a B-2 visa, or if eligible, travel visa free under the Visa Waiver Program."

We hoped to spend at least a few months before and a couple after marriage to spend time with family and friends as we decided to live in Australia after Marriage. He applied for the B-2 Visa, had sufficient funds and strong family ties.

His first attempt he was denied upon these basis: "Unfortunately, you are ineligible for a nonimmigrant visa because you either did not demonstrate strong ties outside the United States or were not able to
demonstrate that your intended activities in the U.S. would be consistent with the visa status for which you applied."

The Consulate Officer told him he needed more proof of "ties" to his country.

My fiance then secured and accepted a job to start after the wedding in Australia. Took the test course for the flight school he intends to attend after his return. I even wrote up a letter of resignation from my job which I only have kept to save money for our future. He applied a 2nd time and was interviewed by the exact same rude Consulate Officer. He hardly looked at him, spoke to him for less than 3 minutes and said his "ties" were too "interchangeable". He also said he told him the first time this Visa was not for him. Which was not true, the impression he left was that he could in fact apply again if he could supply more proof.

It is NOT illegal to get married on a B-2 Visa. When asked by the consular why he did not apply for the Fiance Visa he said "well, I do not intend to immigrate and it's not illegal to marry on the B-2 Visa" The consuler answered rashly "Yes, but you must get one first". What is illegal is overstaying and assuming you can immigrate. In the case he did this, he would be caught and kicked out under my understanding. OR if he wanted to do it legally he would have to leave the country then apply.

I have consulted a migration specialist and he was baffled. He ended by telling me he would think about options. The only thing that came to his mind was trying to expadite a Fiance visa, which was "waste of time an money since he was not immigrating". He also said that of the 3,000 plus cases he'd seen, none were like this.

I've heard from many people since then who struggled the same with the US Embassy in regards to immigration. Perhaps he should not have been so open about marrying me, but in my Fiance's mind he wanted to be honest. I've since read stories of people who were only dating a US citizen and denied a B-2 Visa for this reason.

This system is so wack. Best of luck to anyone going through this too!
