H-4 visa stamping requirements depend on the instructions issued by the U.S. embassy or consulate handling the application. Most H-4 applicants must attend an in-person interview. Applicants should use the interview waiver process, commonly called dropbox submission, only after receiving confirmation through the appointment system.
The H4 visa stamping checklist below separates the in-person interview and interview waiver procedures. Prepare only the documents required for the procedure assigned to your application.
H-4 Visa In-Person Interview Documents
The Department of State’s September 2025 interview waiver update does not list H-4 visas among the categories broadly eligible for interview waivers. H-4 applicants should expect an in-person interview unless the U.S. embassy or consulate provides different instructions.
Basic Application Documents
Review the appointment instructions and prepare the following:
- Current passport
- Previous passports containing prior U.S. visas, when relevant or requested
- Form DS-160 confirmation page with the CEAC barcode
- Interview appointment confirmation
- Visa application fee receipt, when required
- Printed visa photograph, when required by the embassy or consulate or when the online photo upload is unsuccessful
H-1B Principal Applicant Documents
Prepare documents showing the principal applicant’s approved H-1B petition:
- Copy of the principal applicant’s Form I-797 approval notice
- Copy of the approved Form I-129 petition, when available or requested
- Copy of the principal applicant’s passport biographic page
- Copy of the principal applicant’s H-1B visa, particularly when applying separately
- Copy of Form I-94, when applicable
Additional employment or status evidence may include:
- Current employment verification letter
- Recent pay statements
- Forms W-2 and federal income tax returns, when relevant or requested
- Other petition or employment documents listed in the appointment instructions
The original Form I-129 is not a standard requirement for every H-4 applicant.
H-1B Petition Verification
Consular officers verify the principal applicant’s approved H-1B petition through Department of State records, including PIMS or the Petition Consolidated Query Service. Applicants should still bring the principal applicant’s Form I-797 approval notice and any petition documents required by the U.S. embassy or consulate.
Department of State guidance requires verification through PIMS or PCQS before an H visa is issued.
H-4 Spouse Documents
Prepare evidence of the marriage:
- Original or certified marriage certificate
- Wedding photographs or other genuine marriage evidence, when relevant or requested
- Wedding invitation card, when available
- Legal name-change document, when applicable
The marriage certificate is the primary relationship document. Additional evidence may be requested based on the application.
H-4 Child Documents
Prepare evidence of the parent-child relationship:
- Original or certified birth certificate
- Adoption, guardianship, or custody documents, when applicable
- Additional civil documents requested by the U.S. embassy or consulate
Additional Documents When Applying Separately
An H-4 applicant applying without the H-1B principal applicant may also need:
- Copy of the principal applicant’s current passport
- Copy of the principal applicant’s valid H-1B visa
- Copy of the principal applicant’s latest Form I-94, when applicable
- Evidence of the principal applicant’s current H-1B employment and status
H-4 Dropbox or Interview Waiver Documents
Use the H4 dropbox documents process only when the U.S. embassy or consulate authorizes interview waiver submission through the appointment system.
A previously authorized interview waiver is not automatically valid for a new application. A consular officer may still require an in-person interview after reviewing the submitted documents.
Interview Waiver Eligibility for H-4 Applicants
Interview waiver eligibility H4 requirements must be confirmed through the appointment system and the website of the U.S. embassy or consulate handling the application. Follow the instructions provided for:
- Document submission location
- Passport delivery procedures
- Photograph requirements
- Additional supporting documents
- Any later requirement for an in-person interview
H-4 Dropbox Documents
Submit every document listed in the interview waiver instructions. Required documents may include:
- Current passport
- Previous passports requested by the U.S. embassy or consulate
- Form DS-160 confirmation page with the CEAC barcode
- Interview waiver or document submission confirmation
- Visa application fee receipt, when required
- Printed visa photograph
- Copy of the principal applicant’s Form I-797 approval notice
- Copy of the principal applicant’s passport and H-1B visa
- Marriage certificate for an H-4 spouse
- Birth certificate for an H-4 child
- Additional petition, employment, status, or relationship documents requested in the submission instructions
Interview waiver submission does not guarantee visa issuance or prevent a later interview request.
Name Changes After Marriage
Marriage does not require an H-4 spouse to change their surname. The name on Form DS-160 should match the passport submitted with the visa application.
Applicants who have legally changed their name should use consistent information across the passport, Form DS-160, and supporting documents.
H-4 Employment Authorization
Some H-4 spouses may qualify to work in the United States based on the H-1B spouse’s immigration status. H-4 status alone does not permit employment; work authorization must be approved before employment begins.
